3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mansquito (1607) - washington, Washington DC, USA - APR 17, 2011
Napoleon, DC tap in correct glass ($8): Pours a carbonated brown color with a proper looking tan head. Aroma is of plenty of fruit and some yeast. It was interesting that I had the Gouden Carolus Easter ale before this because I noticed some similarity between the two. However, in this the spiciness was a little bit more subdued and the fruitiness was accentuated. A good well-balanced beer, but in my opinion nothing extraordinary.

Dark; almost black with a big head. Cola and spice aromas. Dry malty and tart. I’m not fond of the tart/sour edge to some belgian ales though no doubt an excellent beer I wouldnt get again.

bottle at Strange Brew Shreveport, I can’t believe I’ve never had this before. Pours dark brown with a medium fluffy tan head. Aroma is super floral and fruity. Oranges, strawberry and cherry. Flavor is not as sweet as the aroma would lead on, caramel, candied sugar, fruity yeast ending dry.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 SanfordBrewer (1206) - Sanford, Florida, USA - MAR 30, 2011
opaque brown, thin beige head, medium-full body, medium-high carbonation.
aroma: lots of roasted malt, dark fruit, caramel and toffee, and subtle hints of minerality and herbal bitterness.
taste: roasted and toffee malts, dry musty minerality, leafy herbal bittering hops, and a hint of brett sourness.
much drier than the aroma foretold. the minerality escalates as i go, becoming rather unpleasant. the dryness could result from using a high amount of simple sugar, or possibly from a bit of brett.

The old standby when I can’t find a craft beer to try. Very solid darkish beer. Notes of caramel.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2012 Really dark ruby brown with a big beige head. Aroma of caramel, coconut, candy apples, toffee and spices. The taste is malty sweet, toasty and slightly fruity with a dry, somewhat metallic finish. Medium-full bodied and a little funky. Not bad, but not a favorite.
