4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle, with a 2001 cork. As long as the cork indicates the year, this is a jackpot, for there are lots left, and this seems to be well mellowed. Pours a clear brown with a big fluffy tan head. The carbonation is on the lower end for a Belgian, which may also be a proof of age. Aroma is complex with a strong fig component, and a mix of vanilla and raisin. Palate is warming, with the alcohol apparent, but blended well with the beer's flavor and aroma. Flavor is very fruity, with raisin and fig evident. A little sticky and full bodied as well. I remember having a bottle a little over a year ago from the same store and it not being nearly as good, so aging helps a plenty...

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2004 Bottle opemed in St. Axelandre pub in Quebec City. Poured dark brown/red with a slightly ligher, fizzy head. Medium carbonation. The flavor was rich with many dark fruits noted, especially prunes and anise. Tasted side-by-side with Rochefort 8, and there was minimal difference in flavor. However, the Nocturnum had a substantial alcohol burn in the finish. This beer lacks the complexity that each stage is disctinct in the taste - it isn't blended. Regardless, this is a fine dark strong Belgian.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A huge tan head on a dark brown body. Aroma is nice and intensely malty, some notes of alcohol as well. Toffee notes in the taste with some roastiness. Not bad though at times I detected a slight off metalic taste. Palate is nice with a good mouthfeel. Not my favorite brew but worth the try and the effort.

Pours cloudy brown with a large strong head. Aroma is sweet; prunes, licorice and a little alcohol. Flavor is sweet, too. Plums, a little roasted nut. Finish is balanced by a pleasant alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is a little thin with strong carbonation. A very nice brew.
