Colour and sight: Dark brown-red. A compact white-yellow, stable and lacing head. Scent: Touches of caramel, mocha and chocolate. Spices such as liquorice and coriander are also present. Flavour: Initially, a very good mouthfeel of alcohol and softness. This is followed by an increasing bitterness, partially from the hop, but also from the roasted malt and chocolate malt. Towards the end a nice balance between bitterness, sour and sweet.

Wow, this is complex and delicious, definitely a world class beer. 750 ml. bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar, half price on sale. Nice pour of dark brown with a reddish hue, decent thick tan head that maintains with minimal lacing. Complex malt aromas of plum, chocolate, caramel, clove, roasted malt, bread, alcohol, and earth. Taste is well balanced, with a chocolatey, spicy flavor, slight bitter and sour. Has the complex malt backbone balanced by the spices and hops. Of course we have the fancy, foiled, ceramic-looking bottle with the psychedelic elephant, nice touch. Would repeat, highly recommended.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 18E). Bottle 33 cl - Batch L13_14_184. AROMA: complex malty aromas with caramel and bready notes, mixed with faint esters and a background floral aroma. spicy alcohols present. no discernible noble hop aromas. APPEARANCE: deep amber color and translucid. medium ivory head with below average retention. some lacing. TASTE: mild flavours of toast and dried grapes. the alcohols are present with an almost solventy character, with spicy notes. low bitterness with a medium-dry finish. PALATE: medium-light body with average carbonation. OVERALL: a dark belgian strong ale that showed promise on the aromas but didnt deliver on the flavours. needs more complexity.

Poured from a bomber into a Delirium tremens snifter a darkest amber red/brown color with a huge bubbly head. Aroma is distinctly Belgium. Dark fruit with Belgium candied sugar. Coriander but not over the top. Bready malts. 8.5% so booze isn’t overly done which makes this dark ale so good. The balance to the palate is spot on. A top notch brew.

Bottle from strait and narrow, Lincoln. Dark brown with foamy tan head. Aroma is raisins and prunes, alcohol and deep dark malts. Taste is treacle sweetness and spicy subtle bitterness. Prickly carbonation and surprisingly thin body.

Bottle poured into pint glass. Aroma was sort of fruity, looked beautiful with an amazing thick frothy foam head. I didn’t care for the fruity after taste.
