The aroma on this is hugely phenolic. Monstruous anise dominates the nose. Fairly medicinal (band-aid), malt syrupy candi sugar. Slight floral hops hide in the background. Extremely sweet in mouth, the alcohol seems higher than indicated (and my bottle was 9%). Obviously, I dislike it, it is a big beer of no distinction, no identity, trying to be big for the sole purpose of leaving an impression, which it does, but in a negative way. Nevertheless, I must admit that it remains rather vast in the flavors it procures if the integration could use a lot of improvement. Vast fruitiness array, going from grapes to dates and prunes. The harsh yeastiness adds plenty of estery and clovey phenols to the maze. Rather heavy carbonation (despite the absence of a head after a minute or 2) and oily sticky if not cloying texture. Oversweetened mess ultimately. Magicdave6 (5560), London, Greater London, England

It’s been a long time since I’ve actually tried this ale. However, I remember liking it a lot. That’s all that I remember... of that entire day. 8.5% ABV will do that to you. If you like other Belgian ales that I have rated highly, you won’t be dissapointed by this beer. ’Nuff said. CaptainCougar (5547), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 31, 2002 This beer has a rich malty aroma that filled the room before I could even pour it. It pours a deep dark brown color with a thin coating of head. There is a strange kinda bubbly mouthfeel that seems out of place. Definitely gets better as it warms. Somewhat bittersweet cinnamon body that warms the back of the throat. It could do a better job of hiding it’s alcohol. I think it would be best enjoyed on a cold winter night. The bottle is cool, but is only ceramic looking paint over green glass. Bov (5514), Bienne, Switzerland

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 13, 2003 Very dark brown, but with a reddish shine; big brownish head. Fruity nose, chlorophyl chewing gum, dark malts but restrained. Sweet taste, but with a (Good Heavens!) curry flavour. Roasted malts in the background. Retronasal again fruity tastes (blueberry?). Full bodied, but palate is rather thinnish. Aftertaste comes back with the curry/coriander flavour. Again, not one of my favourites. The nose promesses more than the beer delivers.
