Well, the bottle is cool as all hell. I’ll certainly give it that... a nice painted bottle. Other than that, it’s a sweet, but not simple Belgian. A bit too sweet for my liking.

From the corked, caged 750 ml bottle stamped 20:54/L21-13267. That purple foil took forever to tear off and that bugged me a bit. The pour is dark brown mainly with a moderate tan head that sticks around. The aroma has the expected Belgian roasted malts and yeast up front but the dark fruit character really kicks in more so than any hops or yeasty notes. Medium to full body. Like the aroma the dark fruits are the leader of the pack with the Belgian malts playing second fiddle. Alcohol well-integrated. Very nice.

Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet, Bestillingsutvalget. Mørkebrun med et middels høyt litt farget skum som daler raskt. Svakt krydret aroma. Innslag av søt frukt. Smaken litt nøtter & syrlig malt. Bra - men litt ensformig.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Delirium Nocturnum) Bottle 330 ml at home, poured into a tulip. ABV 8.5%
Deep brown colour on the body, tall but frothy brown head, with good retention nevertheless, leaving minimal lacing on the glass.
Very nice aroma, some roasted malts, chocolate, dark and red fruits, liquorice. some spices.
Nice tasty, fruity with dark fruits, some caramel, well hidden alcohol, some red wine notes, but also a bit metallic on the finish. Light bitterness on the aftertaste with a bit of chocolate too.
Medium thin body, high carbonation, mildly dry palate.
Overall a very nice beer, tasty.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Colore mogano scuro. Schiuma marroncino/rosato.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2014 Poured a dark caramel colour with a thick head that sadly subsided in under a few minutes. The aroma was sweet and inticesing with a smooth taste to follow. One of the best Belgians I have had the pleasure to taste. Strongly suggest drinking from a Belgian tulip or Brandy glass to focus on the head?s notes and mix the volatiles.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2014 Never had a beer quite like this. It has the dark fruits of a dubbel or quad, with the roasted and chocolate malt flavors of a stout. Very sweet with lots of complexity, bordering on cloying but not quite there. Quite different from the Belgian-style stouts that have come out lately, which are much hoppier and less sweet. A nice dessert beer that balances raisins & dates with burnt sugar and bitter chocolate.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
The younger dark counterpart of the well-known Delirium Tremens, with yellowish, very thick, creamy, rocky head and deep mahogany colour with reddish hue. Very malty aroma, chocolatey and caramelly, banana, cinnamon, yeast, brandy-like alcohol, flowery hops. Taste chocolatey malty, grainy, sweet, candied fruits, yeasty, also a bit sourish, some toasted bitterness, dry finish with short hoppiness, rather thin feeling and some warming alcohol. Huyghe just doesn’t seem to succeed in concocting a really well-balanced, classy ale, despite its countless attempts.
