Draft, at the Map Room, Chicago. Dark body that “glows” with brown highlights around the edges. Slightly minty taste like a root beer, then a little bit of fruitiness. Finally resolves to a winey taste at the end. Complex brew that you don’t realize is overpowering you until it’s too late.

The body has a deep, slightly reddish amber color. It has a slightly hazy appearance with some streams of very tiny little bubbles rushing up to the head. The head is tall, light tan in color and slowly fades leaving little to no lacing behind. The aroma is big and full of sweet malt and fruity notes. The flavor is big and full of fruity notes inside a deep, sweet malty base. Flavor notes of tropical fruit like papaya, pineapple, and guava pop out of the sweet malt, no doubt full of Belgian candi sugar. Yeast adds some funk and alcohol is also present in a mellow warming way that adds another nice level of complexity. There is even a slight leafy hop note than brings a hint of bitterness at one point before being surrounded by everything else. Its mouth feel is big, smooth and well rounded. Carbonation is soft and its body is a solid medium to full.

Bottle 75 CL. Pours light Cooper with a off white persistent head. Yeasty aroma with hint of banana. Taste is sweet caramel and candy sugar. Medium body and high carbonation. Caramel in the aftertaste. Hide alcohol very well, high drinkability.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/6/2013. Pours light hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, apricot, banana, caramel, brown sugar, toast, bread, clove, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, apricot, banana, caramel, toast, brown sugar, bread, clove, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, apricot, banana, caramel, brown sugar, toast, bread, clove, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and fairly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong dark ale. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle @ Greg’s dump. Pours a hazy orangish brown appearance with a thin tan head. Pears, apricots, caramel, candy sugar, and toffee in the nose. A little strong but heavy on the spicy, fruity, Belgian yeast. Some caramel and toffee and a touch of smoke. A little banana. Pretty fun.

The bottle I’d remarkably fancy, and the aroma is utterly amazing. Spicy and smooth with spice and a bit of booze. One of the best beers I’ve ever had.
