3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 arjoseph (634) - Chicago, USA - JUN 30, 2006
On tap at the namesake cafe, Brussels. Thick sudsy white head over clear golden yellow in the appropriate tulip. Lace is sticky from the get go, interesting variegation of dense sheet and large holes in no identifiable pattern. Racing is average. Smells like freshly harvested grains and natural sugars, with orange peel and yeasty coriander. Last time I had this (at Map Room in Chicago a few years ago), I remember not liking it that much. This, however, is much better than I remember (although still not a favorite). The fresh grain is the baseline in the taste with a medium body that somehow maintains a kind of wateriness in the face of the 10% alcohol. On top of the baseline is lots of herbal mintiness, with the edge cut off by grainy sugars. The mint in the finish is more like eucalyptus, and for some reason I’m reminded of bamboo (there’s a low-level woodiness to this). The grains come back in the end (especially corn), and in the very end of the finish get kind of mealy (leaving you with an impression far worse than most of the beer). Very interesting; not something I’d need to have all the time, but every once in a while just to remind you something like this is out there.

Big aroma of yeast, very zesty with a nice warm undertone of alcohol. Extremly high carbonation at 1st which makes the beer lively but as the carbonation begins to fade and as the beer begin to disappear along with the alcohol a pleasant mellow feeling takes over. Nice beer.
