For years local air taxis have ferried mountain climbers to the base camp on the south side of Denali, flown flight seeing tours over “The High One,” and dropped off backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts in all corners of the Alaska backcountry. Denali Brewing Company draws the inspiration for its red ale from Talkeetna’s rich aviation history. Brewed with five choice American and European malts and just enough hops for balance, we hope you find Single Engine Red a suitable compliment to your next Alaskan adventure, whether in the air or on the ground.

Unfortunately drank out of a non beer clean glass, and there is whether it’s in my mind or legit a taste of detergent. Caramel aroma, nice ruby appearance. Mostly malt forward, but has a moderate hop bitterness to back up the malt. Medium light bodied, finishes with a little piney and woodsy hop flavor. At 5.8 it’s Sessionable, but could use a little more body in my opinion.

Draft - Nice color, cross between red and brown. No carbonation but I think that is from the tap. A little malt sweetness and well balanced bitterness.

Can. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, caramel, malt syrup), with notes of carpet, dirt, metal. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, unclean. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Ugh, so bad...two strikes and Denali is out for me. Blech.

Aroma: light grain and cereal malts, some caramel, light floral hops. Appearance: clear amber, small, creamy, white head. Taste: medium bitter. Palate: bitters intensify, grain malts, floral hops again, soft carbonation. Overall: OK Amber Ale, not too strong on the malts, but that’s maybe the reason it’s slightly bland. Pint at the brewery, Talkeetna.

on tap @ Prospector’s / Denali Nat’l Park AK --- Clear medium amber, heavy beige rim head, heavy bands of lace. Taste is chewy caramel malt that grows into a fizzy swallow, then moves to easy-going hops for balance in the finish. A solid, good-looking, comfortable brew.
