3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
August 16th, 2012 - Itís approaching a year and a half since I first jotted down the notes for Denaliís IPA, so Iím a little hazy on where and when exactly I first sampled this brew. But I do recall it being a somewhat strange experience, on account of it being an IPA in Alaska, which is very different from being an IPA in San Diego. It has a certain rarity to it that makes the IPA a smaller piece of the pie chart on a beer drinkerís menu Normally the heavy layer of snow that muffles Alaska in the colder months precludes lighter, hoppier brews, but the Spring like jubilance of Alaskaís summer is a great setting for some hops. And so, with scarcity and seasonality in mind, I dove into Denali Brewing Companyís IPA. The head is a frothy, erratic soap-like top, richly lathered after a somewhat clumsy pour, with a nice tortilla and fried fish aroma. That is to say, savory and delicious, and perhaps tainted by a nearby restaurant or diner. The palate is soft and pillowy, caressing like a heavy saison, with the same subtle grain notes. This being an IPA I expect some hops dimension to appear, though its quite soft, unassuming, and more herbal than bitter. This is good, and unique, and rounds out a feeling Iíve had in my gut since I had my first brew up in Alaska - this state does light beers surprisingly well. †I desperately want to stereotype this setting with dark porters and stouts (and to some extent this is true - look at the rating for Alaskan Breweryís Smoked Porter, for example) but brewers up here are no slouch on the lighter stuff here.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The appearance has a hazy golden yellow/orange body with a one finger white foamy head that dies almost immediately, lotsa foamy clingy white lacing all over the place in no sort of pattern (all 6 cans were this way).
The smell has strong dank but piney hops barreling through barely letting any other sort of smell come out (all 6 cans were this way).
The taste has some strong bitter hops in all 6 cans, mellow maltiness comes just a tad, light citrus aftertaste, dry bitter finish.
On the palate, it sits about a light to medium, sessionable, and carbonation is just right for the style and for me.
Overall, this is a very well done AIPA that I would have again and also am looking to try more offerings from this brewery, Iíll gladly look forward to sending some of this East to see what my East coast friends think

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Alaska Lodge (Sea-Tac Airport)
Hazy golden color with creamy head. The hop aroma is well present, fruity and lightly animal. Lean body; the malt flavor is good and delicate, a good background for the powerful hopping as it doesnít hide it. good fruit and manure character, quite fresh.
Nice beer, well drinkable.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can:   Pale golden, light carbonation, moderate to large foamy white head, nice lacing.   Citrusy nose, pith and peel, slight tea leaves.   Similar on the tongue, not overly bitter, faint citrus peel and pith.   Not all that bitter, unlike what the nose suggests.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Tea leaves and citrus pith on the finish.   Smells a bit more vibrant than it comes across.   Decent little IPA tho, despite not being all that hoppy.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance has a slightly hazy orange amber supporting a nice firm head leaving spotty lace. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, piney hops and grapefruit citrus. Taste leans toward the grapefruit citrus having the sweetness of the malt following. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Not a bad IPA, leads me to want to try their other beers.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the source... Pours a hazy apple cider hue and topped with a thin soapy white head... Aroma of pale grain and citrus as well as grass... Flavors are crisp citrus with light bitter grass. Just shy of medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Pretty standard but nicely executed. Iíd drink it again.
