2.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 10, 2012
From BA in December 2007: This bottle was given to me by a work colleague, thanks Ian.
Poured into a Hannen Alt glass three times, it was a deep ruby red colour with a fast fading brown head.
The aroma was all about farmyards, farmyards where sheep have just moved through and left a few piles of droppings behind them. Some would call it a healthy country smell others would not be so kind.
The bottle says ’May contain gluten’, well does it or doesn’t it? I didn’t find anything to like about the taste. There were some burnt malts, maybe some burnt caramel but mostly a peat come earthy smack to it which I just couldn’t take too.
The 6% wasn’t really evident to me, but the flavours I mentioned above did linger, so the mouthfeel was OK even if i didn’t enjoy it.
Big disappointment and letdown, this was not what I expected at all. Winter beer of Britain 1999 ’My Arse’.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - NOV 29, 2011
Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2007. Cask, gravity dispense. Black mahogany in colour with a thin buff tan head. Rich roast coffee beans in the long aroma. Thick mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malt gives strong roast malt notes with coffee and grain evident. Sweet syrupy raisins, dates, dark plum and tiffin cake are also present in the base. There is a slight bitter note of spicy hop resins in the brief aftertaste. Malt returns rapidly with rich treacle toffee and bitter chocolate notes in the sweet but robust finish. An old fashioned stout full of mature flavours. This was a really popular choice at the Troon BF. Highly recommended and worth seeking out.

Very dark brown with ruby edges, tan head.
Aroma of roasted malt....chocolate....light coffee...some fruityness...well blended.
Roasted malt flavour with light chocolate...some coffee.....dark fruits - raisins...quite complex...good smooth flavour
Palate - a bit dry, smooth, soft carb, quite silky but a bit thin. Finish of light roast malt and chocolate.....slight alcohol warming.
Very good, flavoursome stout. Yummy and smooth. If it had more body it would be superb. Must try this cask.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Stephanos (866) - NORTHERN IRELAND - JUN 12, 2011
Yeasty/dusty aroma reminiscent of Farley’s rusks on this dark brown beer with tan head. Initially sweet giving way to coffee grounds then red fruit. Finishing on a coffee note. Dried fruit makes itself known down the glass and a thin head is retained until the end. Fairly thick beer with light carbonation.
