2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - APR 23, 2012
Draught @ DBC: Eclipsed ruby. Nonuniform dirty-white head lives a short life. Husky malt (burnt popcorn) aromas with subtle notes of sassafras, cola, smoke, chocolate wafer cookie, hazelnut, raisin, tarry java. Foamy residue plagues the tongue as the seltzery carbonation fizzles. Airily roasty and intensely grainy with a profoundly dull and depthless "papery" roast character which is worsened by severely husky burnt malt. Cacao nibs contribute earthiness while a distant twinge of black licorice adds sweetness and a bit of cling. A fluttering raisiny fruitiness gently exudes alongside creamed coffee and wafer cookie, as well. Trace chocolate vibrancy comes and goes, though it’s not nearly sturdy enough to withstand the body-hampering huskiness. Finishes lightly charred and everlastingly husky with a cottony flourish of roasty dryness timidly shadowed by smoke and cocoa. A very husky beer, which makes it undrinkable for me. And a rather insufferable mouthfeel to boot, as, once again in a DBC beer, the carbonation is extremely firm, pointy, and intrusive.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a thin, beige head, with slight lacing, over a dark brown (SRM 35) body....nose is vanilla, coffee, chocolate....taste is coffee, chocolate, then vanilla, leading to toffee/caramel and then an astringent bitter cherry, and bitter cocoa powder finish...mouth feel medium towards heave, carbonation moderate. Rich, thick, heavy, this beer has all the appropriate characteristics of the style. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6406) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 2, 2012
draft. cola brown with a small tan head. mildly toast roast and dark caramel malt, a tad rough, husky and unrefined, with a starchy and dry oatmeal / graham cracker quality. carbonation is a bit fizzy and malt is a tad too rough, but otherwise it comes across as toasty, nutty and spiced, leaning to the sweet side.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 arminjewell (3113) - Parker, Colorado, USA - JAN 19, 2012
On tap at Freshcraft in Denver, pour is dark brownish black with off white almost tan head, aroma brings notes of big cookie, graham, vanilla, and milk chocolate notes, hints of bitter roast and earthy notes as well. Taste is bordering on artificial, but a sweet graham and cookie like malt up front leads into some vanilla and caramel notes, touch of roasted chocolate, finishes fairly sweet. Well made, but a bit too sweet.

Tap at DBC. Nose is soft vanilla and spice (mostly cinnamon). Dark brown translucence. Fast fading head, medium heavy lacing. Solid porter malt core with a bit of a sweet but clean finish. More vanilla and spice on finish along with caramel roasted malts. Really nice...everything is balanced-vanilla and spice is just right.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 adnielsen (3756) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - SEP 11, 2011
UPDATED: FEB 12, 2012 Tap @ brewery. Dark brown appearance with a creamy, tan head. Cocoa, light espresso, wood, a touch of smoke, and chocolate-caramel maltiness. Sweet vanilla, cocoa, dark chocolate, light smoke, roasty malty flavor. Vanilla is pretty potent on the finish. Nice brew. Second time around and I’m more impressed this time. Excellent, dessert-like session brew.
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 onceblind (1622) - Denver, Colorado, USA - SEP 7, 2011
On tap @ brewery. Very dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma of sweet graham cracker and roasty chocolate malts. Taste was impeccable. Smoky chocolate graham cracker, a sweetness not unlike marshmellow. Creamy and toasty with a very subtle fruit action going on in the back. I might be in love.
