An amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, a sweet grainy malt, mash tun, herbal and grainy. In mouth, a smooth grainy malt with herbal notes, German hops, boring. On tap at Knoxville Brewer’s Jam, Oct. 22 2011.

12 oz bottle (labeled Amber Ale). Pours a shiny-penny copper with small off-white head. The aroma is sweet caramel, a little bit of fruit, and some mellow herbal hops. The flavor is caramel with some dry maltiness behind it. There is a sort of bland, grassy hoppiness cutting through the sweetness. The finish is slightly dry with some wood and zinc notes. Drinkable, but not all that great.

Did Thomas Edison give up? .. . light caramel .. . medium foam .. . light wood, low malts .. . a bit of a blah beer, but good for an amber- i can see this going against the popo ambers .. . -Thomas Edison wasn’t trying to invent something that was readily available in a wide variety of stores near his home.

First of all, RateBeer needs to fix this....there used to be a beer that was a pale ale called Express Pale Ale, but this beer is no longer in production. This DOES NOT mean that Depot Street Express Amber Ale is the same beer as RateBeer states. But I digress...I am rating the Amber Ale that is available year round on tap and in bottles (both which clearly state the fact that it is an amber ale, not a pale ale). Now to the rating. It is a very sessionable beer, nothing over the top, but sometimes that is what you are looking for. It sure beats the crap out of fat tire...but most people wouldn’t agree with that since Depot Street doesn’t give away free bicycles at the local grocery store. Has a nice balance to it, and a wonderful deep amber color. The maltiness is what makes this beer, I believe I also detect some Cascade hops in there as well, which mingle perfectly with the biscuity malty taste. Has a medium to light body that is extremely quaffable. Overall, a good beer...not great but good.

Draft sample at Knoxville Brewers Jam 2010. Amber in the glass with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of subdue malts and grain. The flavor found grain with a backing of malt and lemon. Light body.
1.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 3/20 tubehead (14) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - AUG 12, 2010
The label identified this beer as an amber ale. This beer is is a very attractive amber orange in the glass with a lightly laced head. Unfortunately, this is the highlight of the tasting. It has a very generic lager-esque nose, completely neutral. The taste starts with flat cardboard and ends with iron and bitter tears of failure. I could not identify the hops used, nor any specific malts. This beer appears engineered for session-consumption and, indeed, it goes down smoothly. It reminds me of home-brew, with an inconsequential body, no weight at all.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Skyview (4880) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JUL 2, 2010
Sampled as Depot Street Depot Express Amber Ale. From 12-oz bottle pours a clear golden amber colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of both Munich and caramel malts, some light grassy hops and a touch of dark pitted fruits. Taste is medium bodied, some caramel and soap flavors, followed by citrus and lemon zest. Finish is mildly bitter with a lemon zest aftertaste that slowly disappears. Actually for an American Pale Ale, the earthy spice is memorable.
