Brown black pour with tan head and lace. Aroma of coffee and light chocolate. Sweet chocolate and some coffee and not much else. Medium bodied with good carbonation.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20 rangerred (336) - Johnson City, Tennessee, USA - NOV 22, 2011
12oz bottle into a pint glass. No freshness date.
Pours jet black with a nice frothy 2 finger head. Decent head retention and lacing.
The smell is roasted malt as well as some smoke. There is also a slight sweetness as well.
First of whoa.. is this over carbonated. I don’t know if I just got an old bottle or what but with the brewery being right down the street I doubt that is the case. The extreme carb. really drowns out the other flavors. I can still pick up the roastiness and the smoke but it all seems muddled.
I’ve had this beer before and remember it being decent. I might need to revisit this sometime.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 CaptBier (322) - Birmingham, Alabama, USA - MAR 12, 2011
black with ruby edges, big dense tan head, dry roasted malt aroma with a slight hint of styleistic tartness, creamy body with a bit of oily character, nice mellow roasted flavor, light bitterness in the finish, the tartness is present in the flavor to add a bit of complexity,
2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 phaleslu (3543) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - FEB 7, 2011
12 oz. bottle as a trade bonus from bobertkuekn- thanks, Robert! Pours a deep, dark brown color, pretty much opaque, with a massive, foamy brown head that sticks to the glass a lot. Aroma of dry roasted malts, rye, dark chocolate, toast, and earth. Flavor drops off seriously from the nose- notes of rusted metal, rye, roasted malts, some weird fruity notes, and rain water. Light-bodied, with high carbonation and a soda water mouthfeel. This beer is bizarre in how much it drops out after the aroma, which in itself is nothing special. So light, watery and carbonated. A little roastiness in it but not much.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 BanjoDude (57) - Kingsport, Tennessee, USA - JAN 21, 2011
Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and a hint of caramel. Pours black with a lasting tan head. It tastes sweet, but has a nice hint of astringency due to the rye (my guess). Very drinkable, would make a good session beer. A little on the dry side and finishes a little watery, but a good beer nonetheless.

(12oz bottle, courtesy of blutt59) clear ruby-brown with creamy tan head. Nose of cocoa, cream, and chocolate malt. Taste of watery chocolate malt, dark fruit but weak (raisins), lightly vinous. Well carbonated, but not a very good beer. Watery finish.

(12oz bottle, courtesy of blutt59) Pours a mahogany body with a small fizzy beige head. Aroma of soy, roasted malt, molasses, and cola. Flavor of roasted malt, cola, light coffee, and plum with a watery mouthfeel and moderately bitter finish.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle.
The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. The aroma is decent. I get some chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor is very lacking. The beer has almost zero flavor, other than some very bland malts. I don’t get any chocolate or roasted notes in the flavor, which is surprising since they were in the aroma. It is actually somewhat shocking that the beer can taste this much like nothing. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle courtesy blutt59. Dark reddish brown color with a round tan head. Aroma is heavy malts, dark notes, roasted beans and cocoa. Flavor is dark malts with a bit of roast. Easy finish. Not bad. No one else at the tasting seemed to care for this one but I did.
