The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester. Smells like an aquarium. Or it could be the pub. Bright gold, tight white lid. Aroma has Belgian leanings with apple tang, sherbet, acid burn white wine. Red/green apple (Burbage eaters) mouth, lemon flicks, slight earthiness. Drying finish with hints of cream. Neither farts nor shits itself.

Cask, JDW, Carlisle. Reliably informed this was also known as ’England’s Dreaming’, during the World Cup. Despite a very hazy/cloudy appearance, this has the most character of the Derwent beers I’ve tasted. Dry and oaty, but with a hint of citrus and a pleasant bitter finish. Would have scored higher with an improved appearance, which, I reckon, was more down to cellaring than the product irself...
