COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Itís fitting this experimental pale ale was the first beer brewed at our Portland Pub. This XPA gets its bitter twist from Nugget, and Northern Brewer hops, then delivers a pronounced citrus kick from Cascade, Centennial and Citra hops. Consider this your next hop obsession.

Malt: Crystal

ContemplateBeer (1996) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - JUN 10, 2016
UPDATED: JUN 13, 2016 12 oz. bottle from Liquor Barn (Fern Valley); drink by 6/16/16, so a little close to the bottle date. Aroma: Citrus & berry tea meet slightly butterscotched, toasted cereal at about a 60/40 hops to malt ratio. Appearance: Rusty copper, somewhat hazy pour with soft carbonation holding up a sticky bone head that settles into a patchy ring. Flavor: Tea-like notes up front with a healthy cereal backing; more berry than citrus thereafter, and a little residual butterscotch hanging out; the finish is mostly dry and lightly bitter. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: This has held up well, I think. It reminds me of Yum Yum, but being from Deschutes, is probably a few bucks cheaper. Recommended all around, and good enough that I want to keep an eye out for fresh bottles in the area.

Brandon1989 (497) - Euless, Texas, USA - JUN 6, 2016
Pours a hazy copper color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma is tropical and pine apple juice. Some floral and bready scents as well. The taste is quite bitter up front with the tropical fruits but finishes with a nice smooth bready malt after taste .

JPDIPSO (5657) - Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 4, 2016
Lightly hazed amber color with a slowly diminishing head of thick beige bubbles. Scents of herbal to floral hops. Some caramel and lightly toasted malt. Sweet start with some berries and marzipan. Sweetness does carry through to the finish even though the bitterness does try to kick in. Smooth, thicker feel. Some resin and leather in the middle. It does dry out late in the linger, leaving a void of flavor.

Bottle: Amber, with a thick, light tan head. Orange, pine scent. Taste is slightly spicy, orange-peel, orange malt...light toffee malt. Nothing new, but a nice flavour.

Bottle poured into a wine glass. The beer is a clear amber with a white head of foam. Good retention. The arom has pine and resinous notes on top of bready biscuits. If a pine forward biscuit were a thing, thats what this beer would mimic. Fairly bitter throughout. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

draft to sampler. poured the normal orange color with white head. this is a pretty typical apa nothing really stands out other than it is drinkable and has a nice citrus kick to it. basic medium malt which is typical of Deschutes and a nice bitterness from the hops. long lasting citrus flavor on the tongue. overall its drinkable but yet pretty average.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber-gold with a high, off-white, lacy, mixed-grained, mashed-potato head. Nose is lime, barnyard, mushroom, earth, cedar, and papaya; odd that it says Citra, as Iím not getting that at all. Sweet and fruity up front, with a slight bitterness; then moves into more pronounced bitterness in the midpalate, with an orange-toffee malt to balance it out.. The bitterness is grapefruit pith and wood ash; itís nicely balanced, and the drying qualities stay consistent without punching you in the face. Finish is long, dry, and a little clove-spicy. I like this. Itís big enough without being too big.
