Itís fitting this experimental pale ale was the first beer brewed at our Portland Pub. This XPA gets its bitter twist from Nugget, and Northern Brewer hops, then delivers a pronounced citrus kick from Cascade, Centennial and Citra hops. Consider this your next hop obsession.

On tap nitro at the free house. Clear orange color with foamy nitro head. Aroma is mainly dank citrus with bready malt. Fruity and orange hop flavor with sweet malt backbone. Easy drinking and smooth.

On nitro, poured into a shaker. The aroma is mild with the brightest tones being citrus and more subtle notes of grain and baked bread. It pours a murky, rusty orange topped with a dense, whipped white head that has great retention and lace. The taste is a balanced medium bitter and sweet (although perhaps a touch more sweetness is noted). The beer is silky smooth with a creamy carbonation. The medium body is flavored with dry citrus and a mild lactose sugar with secondary notes of mellow toffee and bread. It finishes with a light, zesty clean citrus and the aftertaste is very mild and lightly astringent with subtle bread notes and it lightly lingers.

Despite its foreboding name, XPA (Extra Pale Ale), Deschutes Armory is more balanced than hop-forward. The aroma has a biscuit smell from the Crystal malt plus floral and citrusy hop smells. Armory is copper-colored and has a creamy head that lingers till the very end. Flavor is mildly tropical with the Citra hops, but the Cascade and Centennial hops give off a citrusy taste with more bitterness. The strong malt foundation never allows the bitterness to become overpowering. Deschutes has a long-standing reputation for crafting approachable hoppy beers, and XPA is another notch on the bedpost. Actually, Iím not sure that idiom works. Oh well.

Pours clear pale amber with two fingers of rocky light tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is citrus, grainy pale malt, tropical fruit. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter. (7/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering moderately bitter finish. (3/5) I like this. Not quite a traditional APA, but not quite an IPA, either. Bright citrus and fruit play well with the emphatic bitter. Fun, but not great - the flavours arenít as bright as promised by the nose, so though itís bitter, itís not as clean as Iíd like. (14/20)

On tap (flight) at the John B Pub in Coquitlam. A pale Amber beer with an off-white head an a faint hop nose. Tasting confirms a decent amount of citrus hoppiness and a bit of malt in the background. Refreshing. 3.

Draught at St. Augustineís, Vancouver
Clean light amber color with creamy head. The aroma offers a good amount of PNW hops, and very nice cereals; smooth and dry mouthfeel; the malt flavor is a bit grainy, the hops provide some citrus quality, and strong bitterness, possibly too much bitterness in the final.

Many years ago, when it was created, this would have been a top beer in the category; nowadays one would expect a different Pale Ale. But itís still a very good beer, clean and well brewed.
