COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s fitting this experimental pale ale was the first beer brewed at our Portland Pub. This XPA gets its bitter twist from Nugget, and Northern Brewer hops, then delivers a pronounced citrus kick from Cascade, Centennial and Citra hops. Consider this your next hop obsession.

On tap at rogue embassy in SF. Cloudy amber, lots of bubbles, with a creamy white head. Smells doughy, yeasty and with very sharp lemon notes. Ultra creamy and soft on palate. Taste wise, it’s earthy, umami, slightly sweet and finishes with floral notes. Highly drinkable, inoffensive and has a lot of depth. Fantastic.

I had a pint of this on a nitro draft at Funck’s near Hershey. This is a fantastic APA! The pour was light golden with a huge, soft and pillowy white head. The head left a huge amount of lacing around the glass. The nose was quite hoppy with some bready notes. The body was soft, velvety smooth and extremely drinkable. The flavors contained plenty of delicious, floral and resiny hops, along with some citrus, wheat and bread. This was an incredibly awesome APA!

This on my tongue is a hoppy malted IPA. It works but I am not in a rush to have another. Not as good as Stone’s IPA’s, though the alcohol content is there it’ll get you drunk.

A light fresh hop aroma. This is basically a solid pale ale. Normal body with a super dry finish. Good stuff.

It’s still a pale ale, but for the style, definitely one of the better ones. Very flavorful. Nicely balanced between malts and hops. Beautiful copper color pour. Not bitter.

Bottle from Wine Emporium 240714. Great flavour that really fills the mouth and stays for a while. Big head atop a hazy orange beer emitting aromas of citrus, melon and pine.

Hops: Nugget, Northern Brewer, Citra, Cascade, Centennial. Malt: Crystal. Poured from a bomber into a tumbler on 04.29.14. A: See through red/orange. Light head. S: Slight grapefruit, blood orange. Subtle notes. T: Citrus, flower, caramel, tangerine. Also slight graham cracker. O: Citrus and floral sweetness comes on, followed by caramel and graham cracker, then tangerine takes over and lingers. I loved this one. This was also well balanced as all Deschutes offerings are.

Fruity hop aroma: Melon, tangerine... passion fruit or something? Bitter, and sweet malt aroma. Melon, citrus fruity hop flavor. Sweet, subtle biscuit malt. Moderate bitterness.

Despite its foreboding name, XPA (Extra Pale Ale), Deschutes Armory is more balanced than hop-forward. The aroma has a biscuit smell from the Crystal malt plus floral and citrusy hop smells. Armory is copper-colored and has a creamy head that lingers till the very end. Flavor is mildly tropical with the Citra hops, but the Cascade and Centennial hops give off a citrusy taste with more bitterness. The strong malt foundation never allows the bitterness to become overpowering. Deschutes has a long-standing reputation for crafting approachable hoppy beers, and XPA is another notch on the bedpost. Actually, I’m not sure that idiom works. Oh well.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 11/22/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, melon, pepper, wood, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, melon, pepper, wood, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, mango, melon, pepper, wood, pine, honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Fair amount of dryness after the finish from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
