Taste is a nice hoppy bitter with an interesting caramel malt taste that suprisingly comes through the bitterness. Aftertase, is fairly bland though, being short and not very exciting. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2005 Great malt backbone, hints of caramel, nuttiness, some fruity esters, light effervescence, full mouthfeel, floral/herbal aroma with a bit of wet hay thrown in.....but the hop flavor.....is of Cascades. Who uses Cascades in an ESB? I won’t say they ruined the beer for me, since the malt was quite balanced and lovely and the bitterness was primo, but the grapefruit flavor was a little jarring. It was a copper color and I tasted alot of caramel and dark fruit. The beer was a little thin but still good. zathrus13 (1296), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA

Carmel malt is also there. Body is light, and tastes hoppy, with some sweet malt. Thanks to Indiana_Red for sending this one. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

Have a mix of roasted malt and citrus hop aroma. Malty taste, pretty sweet and flavorful. With a citrusy bitter bite. Best head out of these Deschutes brews so far tonight. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA

Lots of wonderful hops and a caramel maltiness that make for a great aroma. The taste starts off smooth and malty with a sublte toasty maltiness, then finishes with a great hoppy bitterness and a bit of grapefruit in the hopped finish. A well rounded clean and crisp taste thats makes this one of my favorite deschutes brews.
