Macanudo (14), USA Apr 3, 2005 Not quite as good as the true British ESBs, Bachelor ESB is a nice substitute. DrunkenWeasel (218), Portland, Oregon, USA Mar 20, 2005 Pours amber with a thin white head. Smell’s stongly of grapefruity hops with malt undertones. Taste is a nice hoppy bitter with an interesting caramel malt taste that suprisingly comes through the bitterness. Aftertase, is fairly bland though, being short and not very exciting. Probiere (992), Iowa, USA Feb 8, 2005 Great malt backbone, hints of caramel, nuttiness, some fruity esters, light effervescence, full mouthfeel, floral/herbal aroma with a bit of wet hay thrown in.....but the hop flavor.....is of Cascades. Who uses Cascades in an ESB? I won’t say they ruined the beer for me, since the malt was quite balanced and lovely and the bitterness was primo, but the grapefruit flavor was a little jarring. Sassy (217), Mullet Capital of the World, Georgia, USA Feb 2, 2005 Had this one at the Atlanta gathering, Thanks to Harlequinn for bringing this one. It was a copper color and I tasted alot of caramel and dark fruit. The beer was a little thin but still good. zathrus13 (1288), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Nov 28, 2004 Amber color, with a light tan head. Hoppy aroma, with some citrus coming thru. Carmel malt is also there. Body is light, and tastes hoppy, with some sweet malt. Thanks to Indiana Red for sending this one. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Nov 7, 2004 Dark amber with minimal biege head.Light aroma of hops and swet maltiness.Flavor is much more than I had expected, delightfullyfresh and hoppy but a little sweet, even better is the light bitterness at the finish.A good brew sent to me from Indiana Red Hab40oz (242), Grants Pass, Oregon, USA Oct 7, 2004 I don’t remember this bitter being so damn good. Have a mix of roasted malt and citrus hop aroma. Malty taste, pretty sweet and flavorful. With a citrusy bitter bite. Best head out of these Deschutes brews so far tonight. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Oct 3, 2004 Updated: Jan 26, 2005This is a damn good ESB. Pours a deep red with a small ivory head. Lots of wonderful hops and a caramel maltiness that make for a great aroma. The taste starts off smooth and malty with a sublte toasty maltiness, then finishes with a great hoppy bitterness and a bit of grapefruit in the hopped finish. A well rounded clean and crisp taste thats makes this one of my favorite deschutes brews.
