05-Sep-08 (12 oz bottle, Best By 06-Apr-07: Purchased 14-Mar-07 for $1.50 at www.liquidsolutions.biz) A beer that was lost but now is found, but long after the expiration date. I expecting a throw away after all these months of aging, but frankly, this beer is very tasty and enjoyable. Very malty, minimally sweet and fairly toasty, and a little earthy and woodsy but hinting at some chocolate in the finish. Light hop flavor and gentle bitterness in the background, but this remains a fairly malt-focused beer. Malty nose, of course, chocolaty, and a little earthy but with some mild tea aroma as well. Light-medium in body, clean and dry on the palate with light-medium carbonation. Clear coppery amber in color, crowned with half an inch of off-white head before settling to a wide ring and filmy layer. Some spotty and stringy lacing on the glass. There’s obviously been some evolution with the aging, but it’s not only held up surprisingly well, it may well be more to my liking now.

Honey + carmel sweet malt aroma balanced by floral and citrus hops. Slightly metallic with some fruity notes (apple, plum) + light spices (vanilla, black pepper, cinnamon) rounding out the aroma. Light fruits kick off the flavor (honeydew, watermelon, green apple). Some carmel + bready malts in the mid. Light to medium dry hoppyiness, which builds to a crescendo + then mellows. The astringent palate was a bit rough. Lively bubbly. A damn good ESB

This is one great ESB. Very full and flavorful. Aroma was all caramel malt. Pour was a dark gold with a 1 finger off white head. Taste was very malty and caramelly with a solid grassy hop backbone. Lovely carbonation and a hoppy aftertaste make this a great ESB.

2008 Bottle - Pours red-tan with a small white head, decent aroma of hop flowers and malt, but then it is typical Deschutes...bitter to be bitter, this tastes like just about four other Deschutes beers, decent, but not great...I like most of their labels, but get bored with the similarities betwixt...

Poured an amber color with a finger of ivory head that slowly fades. The nose had a fine malty scent and a nice citrus hop aroma. The taste was great. It had a smooth malty flavor that was light, but full flavored and a floral hop bite that adds quite a bit of bitterness. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate/good carbonation. This is a fine ESB. It is well balanced and full of flavor; a great beer.
