With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Itís prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

This is the reason microbreweries suck these days, and I run back to macros. Itís a nice package: taste, flavor, dark, malty etc. The 5.2% is a lie. Iím drinking this for the second time as a gift for dog-sitting this weekend. Porter? Iíve had macro lagers darker and better. There is truly no/minimal alcohol in this beer. Packs no punch. A big tease. This is trophy/impress-your-friends beer. You wonít get a buzz.

Bottle. It pours clear, dark brown with a tan head. The aroma is roasted, with chocolate and cocoa. Roasted flavor with chocolate and cocoa. Medium-bodied beer that is quite weak and thin, except for the aroma, which is very nice. (070216)

Bottle. Pours black with short tan head. Good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, and chocolate. Taste is slightly bitter, with coffee and chocolate character. Finish is lacking, gives you the feeling that it is missing something. Mouthfeel is very good.

Out of a bottle it pours a respectable black with a dark tan head. Aroma is sweet, almost red wine like. Taste is bitter, coffeeish and of roasted nuts. Finish is long and enjoyable. I had this one on tap at the Yard House in Phoenix and from what I remember is was a little better out of the tap. Still worth trying if you can only get the bottle though.

Pours dark brown with a generous tan head. Smells of yogurt, chocolate. Tastes of rich dark malt with a full body and nice sweet finish.

A very good beer, you taste mostly chocolate and coffee with a mild bitterness, but it goes down really smooth. Very enjoyable.

Poured a nice deep brown. almost black, with a tan head. Not quite on the same level as Bully Porter, IMHO, but it really has some of the same coffee like bitterness, balance by the toasted malt/ chocolate flavor.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2007 Bottle from Decatrstevo. Had this in the fridge since October. I just kept passing over it. Black with no head. Wonderful coffee, coco, roasted malt aroma. The taste was the same with good robust finish. Creamy on the palate with chocolate notes throughout. Very good Porter.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2009 chocolatey caramel aroma, very nice. has a medium body, medium carbo too. oily mouthfeel, nice sweet malts underneath it all. flavor is dominated by malt, moderately sweet. not bitter at all, goes down very easy. its simplicity doesnít take away from how enjoyable it is. Hard to fault a beer for being immediately tasty.
