3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 17, 2010 On tap, pours almost black with a medium dark head. Nice aroma, mostly malt and chocolate, with a touch of smoke. Clean taste, not overwhelming, same as the nose, with chocolate, some molasses, smoke, all well balanced. Good offering

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
9-26-07 bottle. Black amber color with thick foamy head. Roasted coffee aroma with hints of caramel. A little flat and unmoving on the tongue. WIsh it was more creamy and not so light on the tongue. Too bouncy for what I was expecting. Beautiful flavor and aroma and even appearance but a let-down on the palate. It isnít very rich or creamy - just smooth.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled. Pours an opaque black with a thin, tan head that disolves quickly. Aroma is of dry, ground coffee. Taste was roasted malt and slight unsweet chocolate. Short, finish. Solid porter.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Big thanks to franknbeans for this bottle.
Dark ruby brown/almost black colored pour with a nice tan head. Smell was mild but nice and of dark roast malt. Taste was dark and roasty bordering burnt. Mouthfeel was a bit too light, but was nicely carbonated. Could stand to be a touch thicker, and bolder, but still a nice roasty taste and a decent easy drinking porter

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a thin dense dark tan head. Mild sweet roast aroma - light-bodied, lightly carbonated. Moderate bitter roast flavor with a mild finish. Not overwhelming on any sensory level, but a decent porter. Still, this was disappointing coming from Deschutes. Want to try on tap.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a very dark coffee-brown color with an off-white head. Nice rich coffee-like, chocolatey, smokey, woody aroma. Really nice full range of flavors including lots of coffee, chocolate, dark roasted malts, burnt toast, some bitterness, and a bit of a sugary fruitiness. Great stuff. Nicely full-bodied with a bit of a syrupy texture. I bought this randomly, just saw it in a store... glad I took the chance on this one, Iíll definitely look for it again!

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This is a great porter I think that everyone who likes porter likes black butte. Shíe a bit smoky. Not in a liquid smoke way though. Not at all artificial tasting. Good dark chocolate bitterness on the finish.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
I tried this brew from a bottle that I purchased from a 6 pack. I always just buy one...then if I donít like it, I didnít buy a whole pack. Here is my review of this American Porter:
Aroma: The aroma was a hard one to nail down because so many notes stood out for me; chocolate, coffee and nuttiness all were components in this brew. Very high Malt smell.
Appearance: When I poured this porter into my glass is was a very dark brown and when I held it up to the light the edges where a dark ruby, according to BJCP style guidelines is a must. The head was a two finger widith tan color and it sustained all the way through.
Flavor: The flavor is quite mellow w/o a tinge of hops. Rosted malt, chocolate and coffee stand out as the foremost tastes that hit my pallette. The brew is absent to fruity or bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Very deep and pillowy. Low carbonation. I noticed that the carbonation from the head laced down the glass quite nicely.
Drinkability: This brew is definately drinkable. It is a nighttime drink in my opinion and would go well with a dark chocolate desert as a food pairing.
Excellent example of an American Porter, I would have another.
Drink more beer!!!

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 20, 2010 Draft At long Beach Yard House - Started nice, but lacked any depth or flavor layers found in other Porters. It was my first contact with Deschutes, and I was disappointed. Good but not great.
