With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small cream head. Smells of cocoa, wood, and roasts. Palate is smooth and medium bodied. Flavor is very similar to their Obsidian Stout: dark chocolate, cocoa, intense roasted flavor, and chalk. Finish is pretty dry. Good blend, if you ask me. Well made overall, I think I prefer Deschutes’ Obsidian stout slightly for its more intense flavors.) 3.7

Pours a very deep but translucent brown, thick cream-brown head that laces nicely. Seems quite fizzy. Roast malt with a sweetish hint of chocolate in the aroma. Some piney/citrusy notes as well. Medium body with somewhat sweet roasted coffee flavor, with a touch of the citrusy hoppiness near the end. Also some real smokiness that lingers. Pretty tasty.

Amber/black color. No light traveling throug these colors. Smells of roasted malt. Not as watery as expected. Pretty darned good.

A decent porter that is exactly as described: Malty, chocolatey, somewhat nutty. A little bitter toward the end. This is a very drinkable beer, but doesn’t really compare to Deschutes Obsidian, which is it’s bigger, stronger, bolder stout brother.

Sampled at West Coast Brew Fest ’08 ~Poured black with small disappearing brown head. ~Sweet malt scent with some chocolate. ~Taste smoky and malty with a bit of alcohol tinge. ~ Goes down smooth with a barley bitter aftertaste. ~ Nice porter. Easy to drink.

Sampled at the Savor DC event. Pours a watery, opaque black with a thin slightly beige head. Big malt aroma, sweet, chocolaty, toast and nuts. Flavor is similar, nuts, coffee, sweet malts, grain, toast. Slightly chalky on the palate with plenty of carbonation. Drinkable, but served next to the Obsidian, this was a let down.

12 oz bottle from ??, sorry I didn’t label this beer, but thanks! Pours a solid black medium to slightly thin looking body with a large light beige foamy head. Aroma of bittersweet chocolate that has a slight touch of chalk and some bitter citrus rind aroma finishes it off. Medium to slightly thin body with lots of carbonation. Perhaps the carbonation seems so strong since the body is a little thin? Flavor very close to the aroma but after the first few sips the chalk flavor disappears, or maybe I simply became used to it. What is left is roasted malts, chocolate and some bitter citrusy hops that finsihes on the sweet side. An okay Porter but I prefer to see more roasty/toasted notes and less sweetness.

On tap. Dark black brown body with a creamy head that is slightly darker than guinness. Nose is roasted and chocolate and some coffee. Taste is about the same. This beer is highly quaffable and feels soft in the mouth.
