COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Tasted 15/09/06 bottle from BrewNZ . Pours a deep brown with reddish highlights. Aroma carrys hints of coal smoke along with fruity american hop notes. Sweet malt and stone fruit on the pallet before drying to a gentle coal like smokyness. Very easy drinking for its 5.2% perhaps could do with just alittle more residual bodey.

Tasted 20/09/2006. 12oz bottle from BrewNZ. Deep chestnut brown with golden highlights. Tan head diminishes and dies. Toast, slightly burnt, dominates the nose with a little sweet malt and chocolate. there’s a little fermentation heat on the nose, which takes away some pleasantness. Quite sweet up front in the mouth, good crystal presence, followed by a strong toasty middle and a long, drying, roasty astringent finish. Warming notes linger but are never harsh. Hops hardly noticeable, just a mild bitterness. Good medium weight and med-low carbonation. Nice beer.

Thanks to Kenb for this one. Pours out a very nice dark black/brown with a small off white lacing head. Tons of roasty aroma with some notes of chocolate. Very nice mouthfeel. Flavors are nice and complex with chocolate, roasted malt and a slight touch of smoke on the finish. Not a huge fan of this style, but this one wasn’t bad

Strong, roasty aroma... loads of espresso, chocolate, and nuts. Flavor is very dry and very malty. Fairly creamy, medium body. Another nice brew thanks to Indiana_Red.

Bottle. Almost black in colour with a small head. Mild and round. Roasted malt with hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Palete a bit thin.

Roasty, toffee and sweet on the nose. No detectable hop aroma or esters. Dark brown with the characteristic ruby highlights. Good lacing in the glass. Grainy, slight fruity hop flavour coming through midway, roasty malts dominate - black malt with only a slight coffee coming through. Sweet malt and some warming alcohol opn the palate later on. A little thin in body. Pleasant bitterness to round out the malts. No astringency. Pleasantly surprised - except for the thin body.

Bottle as a bonus from kenb, thanks man! Aroma of yeasty minerals, nutty chocolate and a bit of soft coffee roastiness. Very dark brown in color with hints of light showing through when held up to a light. Head is light tan and fades from about an inch tall to a thin layer. Flavor reminds me of rusty, caramel covered burnt coffee beans with some chocolaty notes. Mid palate I notice a bit of fruitiness mixed with mint. Body is medium with an almost creamy texture and chalky finish from the roasted malt. Overall, it is pretty nice.

Bottle via trade with kenb. Aroma: Sweet aroma overall with notes of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, anise, and slight pine and floral hops. Appearance: Dark brown with slight reddish-brown highlights. Head was tan, full, and frothy. Head quickly dissipated into a film. Flavor: Big roasted malt flavor, coffee, chocolate, molasses, slight smokiness, and a bit of piney hop flavor. Palate: Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Slight astringency detected. Overall: A good, solid, well crafted porter.
