With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

This was a very good porter. Very dark with a quickly diminishing cream colored head. It has a nice smooth taste with the typical roasty coffee porter aftertaste. This definitely not the best porter I’ve had but it is pretty good.

Decent porter but not up to the bar that has been set by some of my recent porter tastings. Mostly this seems due the thin mouthfeel for the style - a few people have mentioned that a change of recipe recently made it this way, ie thin and bright and carbonated. If this is the case, change it back, because the flavor seems very good and is being hampered by the body.

Deep mahogany pour on this one. Average sized head that soon forms a light tan colored ring in the glass. The aroma is yeasty with a strong carmel malt note. The flavor is sweet finishing with a bitter tang. Somewhat thin body, but very drinkable all around.

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2004 This Excellent Porter pours a velvety very dark brown {almost black} with a nice caramel head. Smooth and not bitter which is a plus. There is a yummy banana aroma and taste dancing in the middle along with some coffee and a rich sweet dark roastiness. Chocolate and a sweet ripe fruitiness with toffee hints abounds. Could be even better with even More rich/thick dark roastiness, coffee, sweet aged fruitiness and caramel/maple syrup and a thicker/fuller mouth feel. But still this is a very excellent porter! ~~~ I have heard that an unfortuanate change in this porter has recently taken place just a few months ago... thinner and brighter in taste, less rich etc. {This is happening far too often nowdays.} Still, this rating is for the current style. ~~~ This Is Still A Very Wonderful And Rich, Satisfying And Delicious Porter To Savour ! Excellent !

Dark ruby brown color. Roasted barley and chocolate aroma with a hint of hops. Roasty, fruity malt flavor. Some light hop flavor in the finish. Not a bad porter.

Its fun to refer to this as "Black Butt". Go on try it. You’ll laugh yourself silly. Bark Brown, no head. Great Chocolate, coffee aroma. Slightly thinnish on the tongue. Nice coffe flavors up front, with some undertones of vegetable as well. Nice, could possibly stand to be a bit more assertive.

The pint of this beer had a nice dark black color and little head. The aroma was rich with chocolate. The taste was excellent. Very smooth and after some IPAs that is a welcomed and fresh taste. Even though I am not a huge fan of porters I can say this is a quality beer no doubt. I only knock it a little for not having a full taste or much aftertaste.

This was one of my favorite Porters of all time, but then they changed it serveral months ago and it’s not nearly as good now. It’s a lot ’brighter’ and a bit ’tiny’. The carbination seems over done and it comes off thin (compaired to what it was before). It is still a good Porter when compaired to what’s out there, but it’s not nearly as good as it was.

Very dark for a porter. Great head and lacing. Nice chocolate aroma. Roasty chocolate flavor. Slightly creamy texure. Nice coffee finish with no bitterness at all.

Bottle. Nice malty aroma. Sweet and malty but with a nice roasted aftertaste.
