With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Itís prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2005 Red-brown with a light smoked aroma. Not sweet at all. Faintly nutty; in fact, reminds me more of a nut brown ale than a porter, but it works. A noticeable metallism combined with a bit too much carbonation are this beers downsides. Re-rate: 9,5,8,4,17 Iím impressed with my consistency. More smoky than I remember, but still nice.

Nearly black, decent tan head. Roasty and slightly sweet. A little saltiness and light bitterness. Satisfying.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2007 Second rating: When you get a good bottle of this, itís almost all the way lovely. Fabulous head, very smokey character as a porter should have, it is actually mild aside from that, and medium-bodied.

Original rating (3.3/5): Medium-intensity aroma of coffee and chocolate. Pours very dark opaque brown with nice head that diminishes over time. Flavor is quite mild, and palate even milder, which probably affects my perception of the flavor. I could get more from my porter.

Bayside Cafe - Bellingham, Wa Deep black fine brown bubblew with deep roasted malt flavor. Creamy and smooth, no acidity or bitterness, just smooth and sweet

Another beer that Iíd MUCH prefer on draft than in a bottle. On draught, it has a nice roasted flavor with a well balanced low hop presence. In the bottle, it is a little above average for what Iíd call a porter.

Opaque ruby-jet with nice beige foam top that looks like uneven pond ice. The flavour is a tangy roast with some toast in there. Sourish toasted coffee flavour with significant residual sweetness. Notes of vanilla and no real bitterness. Light to medium body with mild carbonation. Nothing spectacular.

MadMan (495) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - APR 24, 2005
From notes taken at the Southwest Beer Festival in Scottsdale, Arizona: Draft. Dark and cloudy brown with diminishing beige head. Light malt aroma. Flavor is malt with some herbal hops. A bit thin, but has a nice dry finish. Sorry but those are the notes...........the conditions were harsh to take notes in. The ratings stand.
