With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Itís prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Bottle shared at the First Annual Florida Ratebeer Gathering. These ratings were taken from one day of about 60 different tastings all were good and all have blended together but I know I thoroughly enjoyed every one of them and none were bad.

Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a small brown head. Aromas of coffee, bakers chocolate, and roasted malt. Palate was medium bodied and slightly dry. Flavors of coffee, bitter chocolate, with hint of smoke and a lingering dry, mildly bitter finish.

Tap. This stuff was delicious. Poured a solid black with a small light brown head. Smelled strongly of coffee, malts, and chocolate. Full bodied, smooth, tasty. Tasted like bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee. The alcohol was not at all present. Dry finish. Good stuff.

On tap, Zeitgeist. Glad I took notes, I donít even remember drinking this! It was in a pretty surreal atmosphere though, hole in the wall under an overpass watering hole full of the pierced, the punk, and the eclectic -not something a big Canadian oaf tourist like me usually fits in to, but damn if I didnít have the best time of my stay here, thanks to the great bartenders and the awesome atmosphere. Anyway, this beer. Dark brown, big tan head. Semi-sweet aroma. Sweet porter taste, over decent medium body. No roast, no hops. Weird, but somehow works quite well - not your average porter for sure. Good.

Dark, reddish brown body. Hints of chocolate and roasted coffee. Roasty chocolate flavors slightly smokey. One of my favorite porters.

Aroma of chocolate, roast malt, coffee, caramel, vanilla. Appears an almost opaque brown with some red as the light passes through. Flavor is roast, chocolate, some coffee, with a slightly hop-like bitter finish. Palate is medium-full with a nice bubly effervescence, finsih is clean and dry. Overall, a very nice porter, and definitely equal to the sum of its parts.

This is the best porter that I have ever tasted. It does not have a smoky aftertaste like Stone Smoked Porter. Instead, it has a roasted, cocoa-like aroma similar to Mackeson Stout.

this is a really good porter. Everything from Deshutes deserves a taste, but this is one of their better offerings. Lots and lots of head, very woody and malty/choclatey with the alcohol somewhat subdued. The aftertaste is really long and good, you can taste the brew for a full minute afterward. This is as good as Anchorís Porter.

A decent, drinkable porter. Has some strong berry flavors (maybe raspberry) that I could probably do without, but a decent beer to try nonetheless.
