With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

[2/27/15] Draught at Deschutes Brewery & Public House in Portland. Black. Roasty aroma with some licorice, coffee and a bit of chocolate. Bittersweetish roasty flavor with coffee, licorice, and a dry bitter finish. Medium-bodied.

Draft.. Flat black with a head that quickly disappears. From the description I was expecting more aroma. I did like the taste. Light coffee with just a hint of bitterness. A solid Porter ,

Deep brown pour, some red tinges. thin ring of tan head. Roasted malt nose, dark chocolate. Nice rich taste, fairly sweet, then finishing with some good bitter notes.

Very slight roast and chocolate aroma. Dark brown that you can see through. Tan head with five bubbles that thin but last. Less body than I expected. Sweet but very drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice and dark with a great head. Head retention is good. Aromas are chocolate and coffee malts with a small hit of herbs. Goes down very smooth with a nice butterie feel in the mouth. Definitely taste some coffee, chocolate, dark malt, hops, faint hint of vanilla and peat/smoke. As always, Deschutes does a great job at interpreting a classic porter but managed to give it a bit of a west coast flair to it. Awesome everyday brew.

Pours a very dark ruby red with a light tan head. Very sweet smell of hazelnut and vanilla. Has a slightly acidic taste with notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Heavy bodied and a lightly oily texture.

Spare head, off-white color. Quite dark brown beer. Aroma is almost all malt; some chocolate especially on the finish. Hops are very light. Body is on the light side for a porter. Texture is somewhat creamy. Finish is only average in length and intensity.

Poured from 12oz bottle into tulip. 3 Finger head, moderately slow to dissipate. Appearance is extremely dark brown almost black. Hold it up to the light and it has almost a reddish appearance. Aroma is slightly hoppy. Faint hints of roasted malt, maybe a touch of toffee and a hint of coffee . Tastes like a porter, a simply well made porter. Nothing more, nothing less. Easy drinker. Enjoyable.

Bottle: clear, dark brown, light to medium head and very good lace. The aroma is roasted, slightly burnt, chocolate but clean and fresh. The palate is dry not ready sour and moderately bitter. It fresh although the flavor is slightly burnt and ash like. The is a creamy feel and it has high carbonation.
