With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

An indistinct porter, mild bordering on boring, and while it doesn’t taste bad, there isn’t much here to recommend. The beer is dark brown with a giant mound of foamy head that necessitates a very slow pour. The aroma is slightly bright coffee and mild caramel. There is a little spice on the back of the tongue, too. Not bad, just nothing remotely special.

Very good porter. Pours a dark brown almost black, with light tan head, but not very much of it. Nose is roasty, maybe a little chocolate. Taste is very balanced between dark roast, some chocolate notes, some toastiness, and a bit of bitterness from some West Coast hops. It isn’t a flavor bomb, but a balanced flavor profile. Feels full, carbonated, and creamy in the mouth, and finishes nicely.

Big roast, nice hops, bitter cocoa powder, and some light soy. Silky mouthfeel, low bitterness and a great roasty finish. Just a solid overall great Porter. Perfect example of the style.
