With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Sweet aroma of coffee and chocolate notes. Black color with amber edges. Tan frothy head upon the pour. Very fresh taste. Probably made from water of the gods. Medium-sweet taste that has the slightest tinge of bitter in the finish. Medium body with a thin texture. Not a bit of carbonation. This is a fantastic porter at an affordable price. High quality!!! Definitely recommended!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/27/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, light plum/apple, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, earthy hops, and light yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, light plum/apple, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is a fantastic English porter style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering

Bottle at the American craft beer stall at the 2015 Great British Beer Festival, London. Poured very dark brown with a tan colour head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Medium sweetness and bitterness, texture is creamy though a little too high in carbonation. Finish of roasted bitterness. Finisher to a great day at GBBF.

A very drinkable Porter. A good representative of the style. Not, in my opinion, equal to Bell’s which is one of my favorite beers regardless of style but still at the top on the American Porters. Lots of malty tastes and pretty chocolaty. A very pleasant beer.

Coarse light brown foam that will last a while. The aroma is dark chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is rich and good, but not as heavy as many American porters often are. It has good dark and slightly bitter chocolate as the main theme, but also light coffee notes and English licorice lurking in the background. Malt is burned and provides a good basis for maintaining the aforementioned flavor notes. Its hop bitterness is sufficiently and maintains the taste long. A nice all-round porter who just could not put the largest footprint in memory, yet has many good elements in it. An approved porter.

12 oz bottle. A "thin" porter with a creamy mouthfeel. Taste of chocolate and roasted finish. If you think that porters are to "heavy" for warmer weather, give this one a try.

Beerfest Asia, Singapore on 25/06/15. 50ml sampler. Black in colour with a small tan coloured head. Medium body and light carbonation. Aroma of hops, chocolate and coffee. Smooth flavour profile - roasted chocolate malt, coffee, caramel, marshmallow. The sweet flavours run into a nice bitter finish. Pretty good.
