With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Sweet aroma of coffee and chocolate notes. Black color with amber edges. Tan frothy head upon the pour. Very fresh taste. Probably made from water of the gods. Medium-sweet taste that has the slightest tinge of bitter in the finish. Medium body with a thin texture. Not a bit of carbonation. This is a fantastic porter at an affordable price. High quality!!! Definitely recommended!

Pours clear brown with amber-brown highlights, one finger of rocky tan head diminishing gradually to a thick cap and spotty lacing. (3/5) Nose is dark roasty malt, coffee and dark chocolate, mild liquorice and vanilla, slight earthy and citrus hops, very faint smoke. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (7/10) Medium body, soft carbonation, crisp mildly bitter finish. (4/5) An interesting porter with a hint of earthy hops and a crisp, very slightly citrusy tart finish. A definite American twist on a style that tends to be a bit, well.. boring. It’s not an unreserved success, but it’s also not your grandpa’s porter, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. (14/20)

Deep brown with moderate tan head. Coffee, chocolate, toasted malts, and buttery tastes. Goes through mild sweetness to bitter aftertaste as it lingers. Smell is much weaker than taste but the chocolate and coffee are still present. Thinner body than expected, but this makes the beer very quaffable. Quite nice overall for the price I paid and at the low ABV you can knock a few back without much trouble.

12 oz. bottle, consumed on 3-26-15. Dark brown, almost black with an amber hue. Small amount of short-lasting, taupe head. Nice tint to the color of the head, but, otherwise, ordinary appearance for the style. Coffee, char, and mocha scents in the pleasant aroma. Very nice, charred toast flavor. Coffee with cream. Medium body. Reasonably crisp and lively in the palate. Smooth and almost silky. Simple beer and in a style for which I don’t particularly care, but a clearly well executed one. Well above average for a porter and a slightly above average beer overall.

[2/27/15] Draught at Deschutes Brewery & Public House in Portland. Black. Roasty aroma with some licorice, coffee and a bit of chocolate. Bittersweetish roasty flavor with coffee, licorice, and a dry bitter finish. Medium-bodied.

Draft.. Flat black with a head that quickly disappears. From the description I was expecting more aroma. I did like the taste. Light coffee with just a hint of bitterness. A solid Porter ,

Deep brown pour, some red tinges. thin ring of tan head. Roasted malt nose, dark chocolate. Nice rich taste, fairly sweet, then finishing with some good bitter notes.

Very slight roast and chocolate aroma. Dark brown that you can see through. Tan head with five bubbles that thin but last. Less body than I expected. Sweet but very drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice and dark with a great head. Head retention is good. Aromas are chocolate and coffee malts with a small hit of herbs. Goes down very smooth with a nice butterie feel in the mouth. Definitely taste some coffee, chocolate, dark malt, hops, faint hint of vanilla and peat/smoke. As always, Deschutes does a great job at interpreting a classic porter but managed to give it a bit of a west coast flair to it. Awesome everyday brew.

Growler from Big Hops. Very dark brown, with a thin white head. Aroma of roasted malts, a little chocolate. Creamy feel. Pretty good.
