With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Almost no aroma from bottle. Pours thinnish dark brown to black, touch of orange. Light nuts, medium malt balance. Substantial unheavy mouthfeel. Clean finish. Quaffable and satisfying, but doesn’t leave much of a signature memory sip to sip.

Tap at Cooper. Dark black pour with minimal head. Dark malts on the aroma. Taste pretty much follows, a little thin but creamy. Slight ashy finish. Very drinkable porter. I like it.

On tap, GBBF 2016. Dark brown, tiny white foam. Rounded, malty, coffee and treacle. Nicely bitter, not overly hoppy. Good stuff.

2016 Philly Beer Week draft at Deschutes Street Pub. Pours semi-opaque cola-brown with a touch of a tan head. Aroma of coffee over nutty malt. Body is medium and just a touch oily. Mild finish. Flavor of nutty malt underneath a note of coffee. Slight note of char.

The first porter I remember ever trying. A true classic in every right. The perfect balance of malt, chocolate and roast characters blended to create a creamy mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a rich brown color. The aroma is caramel malt with a subtle roastiness.

Sweet chocolate, molasses, dark malts. Clear, dark brown, spare, frothy, off-white head. Medium sweet. More dark malts, toasted flavours, dark chocolate, charcoal, fairly short duration. Very nice Porter, well-balanced and quite intense. Cask at GBBF16, Olympia.

An indistinct porter, mild bordering on boring, and while it doesn’t taste bad, there isn’t much here to recommend. The beer is dark brown with a giant mound of foamy head that necessitates a very slow pour. The aroma is slightly bright coffee and mild caramel. There is a little spice on the back of the tongue, too. Not bad, just nothing remotely special.
