With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Itís prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

A lesson in the underestimation of beer dating. Gift from a friend in 2006. Bottle dated best by 02/20/07. Stored cold since. Drinks much the same as many of the past descriptions. Head fizzed audibly, almost seltzer-like, died to thin rim lacing in 20 seconds, yet zippy, fine bubble in each lovely sip. Coffee, cocoa, pipe tobacco on nose. Creamy and lively texture. "Sweet & dry" chocolate, root (sassafras et al), and black tea. A tribute to the integrity of this beer. Perfect on a raw October night in CT. Thanks Zep!

Black Butte Porter is a dark brown opaque liquid with light brown head of small bubbles. Nose is sweet with caramelized roasted malt. Taste is a medium rich roasted malt and caramalized brown sugar mix with a nice coffeeish bitters going on. body is smooth and happy. a good porter.

Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours a very very dark reddish brown with a good head and decent lacing on the glass.

The aroma is cocoa and raw coffee beans. Itís lightly sweet smelling with some mild fruity hop character.

The flavor is really well balanced, not especially sweet at all but mildly so with a fairly bitter roasty character.Itís got a lot of chocolate and coffee notes along with a pretty nicely defined "c" hop flavor.

Easily something I could drink a whole lot of no doubt.

Look: pours a dark black. Light brown head. Thick lacing. Smell: chocolate. Bitter chocolate. Coffee. Taste: chocolate. Coffee. Heavy malt. Feel: medium carbonation. Not as thick as I expected for a porter. Overall: good beer. More coffee flavor than expected. Slight underlying bitterness that I didn't expect. First Drank: home 8/20/14

A colablack beer with a big and beige head. The nose is strong, roasted, coffee, some liquirice, smoke, chocolate and herbs. Taste has liquirice, coffee, mild roastiness, smooth, some chocolate. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation. Nice liquirice porter with pleasant and smooth palate and strong flavours.

Pours dark brown/black with a brownish head. Good carbonation. The aroma is clean, perhaps too clean. I miss the wonderful esters present in English Porters like Fullerīs. The flavor is quite roasty with an ample bitterness. Lots of roasted coffee character through the use (overuse?) of black patent malt. Good beer, but it tastes like a hundred other craft Porters out there. And just as with so many others, the fine line between Robust Porter and Dry Stout seems to have been crossed. Just another Stout hiding behind the Porter name.

Draft at Aces and Ales. Pours black with an off white head. Almost beige. Aroma is roasty, milk chocolate, fresh bread. Flavor is similar, with a slight grassy bitter in the finish to balance. Solid porter.

On tap at Monks. Pours thick dark black with decent lacing from a creamy light cocoa beige head. Aroma brings toasty chestnuts, toffee, and cocoa powder, lighter. Flavors bring toasty nuts as well on a lighter easy drinking body.
