COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Dark and malty, with a roasted character just as a robust porter should have. When served ice cold, the true flavor of this beer doesn’t come through - serve it lightly chilled and the aroma and flavor really stand out. I don’t always drink porter, but when I do, I prefer Black Butte. Even though I’m not the most interesting man in the world.

Molasses. Did anyone say molasses? The other hints noted are there but the maple syrup/molasses flavor is big. Bigger at first but doesn’t fade too much. A great high flavor and unconventional porter.

355ml bottle. Ruby red glowing, dark brown colour with average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige to tan head. Minimally roasty dark malty aroma with a cautious touch of liquorice, hints of cocoa, chocolate, a fruity touch of berrries and plum. Taste is initially minimally sweet fruity, hints of red berries, later chocolately dark malty, hints of cocoa, dry and slightly malt-spicy finish; super soft and silky palate, fine pored, vivacious but still pillowy carbonation.

341ml bottle. Rich mahogany in colour with a thin but lasting beige head, light lacing. Aroma is of caramel, liquorice, molasses and roasted malts. Flavour is a bit thin, some chocolate, light roast with a small sweetness. Thin mouthfeel, light body, moderate carbonation. Finishes fairly quick, thin. Just noticed the date on the bottle, BB November/07 (opened April 2010). Oops, a little late on opening this one.

Very dark brown with a tight short lived white head. Smells of plumb and toast. Taste is coffee, and cherry. Mildly bitter aftertaste. Very nice beer

Super light and drinkable for a dark beer. Tastes like coffee and chocolate milk. Slightly charred.

Not sure how I haven’t rated this one. Pours black butthole black with beige top, medium in size. Aromas and flavor are licorice, dark malt, cocoa, rye, light roast, and sticky espresso. Medium bodied with light bitterness.

Mahogany hued body topped by tan head w/ good lacing. Nutty, roasted malt nose. Brown sugar, almond and coffee flavors.

From bottle. I don’t think I’ve had any Deschutes offering that isn’t decent. This is a standby on a hot day. Great body and taste, not the best porter I’ve ever had, but for an everyday porter, this is great. I think I’m spoiled living in Oregon and having much of their selection at my disposal.

Brown color with roasted and sweet aroma. There's a bite to it up front that quickly gives way to creamy roasted malt sweetness. Finishes sweet and some chocolate but not too much. Medium body and well balanced. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
