With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Good porter. Subdued aroma, opens up in the mouth. Milk chocolate, caramel, bananas, and dark-roasted malt. Strong bitter finish. Dark amber, light bodied.

i see not a thing wrong with this beer. nose: that date and walnut cereal i cant remember the name of. toasted grains. very vibrant. palate: perfectly balanced. the roastiness/sweetness/hops are not overwhelming and what you’re left with is a gorgeous dance of date/bran maltiness, tannin, sharpness from the carbonation, milk chocolate/mocha, and a balanckng vegetal/nutty quality. i say yes...you say no! you say stop, but i say go, go GO!

A pretty nice porter. Smooth and sweet, roasted, malty. A somewhat dry finish.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a pitch black color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell as well as some other darker aromas of cocoa and coffee. Mixed with these smells comes some caramel sweetness as well as a little bit of a brown sugar smell, all in all, producing a dark and roasted smell. Taste – The taste begins with a nice roasted malt flavor mixed with sweeter taste of caramel and brown sugar upfront. As the taste moves on, the roasted malt tastes are joined by some flavors of coffee and chocolate, with the chocolate beginning out to be the stronger of the two, but later being outdone by the coffee. With the coffee growing stronger toward the end, and with some hop flavors of a more herbal and earthy nature coming to the tongue at the very end of the taste, one is left with a rather smooth roasted sweet, but nicely balanced taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side for a brew of only 5.2 % with a carbonation level that is on the lightly lower side overall. For the porter style and for the mix of dark, roasted, and sweet flavors, the feel is quite nice, really allowing all the great flavors to coat the tongue. Overall – A rather tasty, more modest abv. porter, that has a nice drinking feel and flavor overall.

Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, toast, roasted coffee. Taste is sweet at first but finished bitter, nearly cleaned itself up. Medium body and medium carb. Definitely a favorite as far as standard porters go.

It pours a dark brown with a thick creamy tan head. The head fades slowly, leaving ok lace. Taste is of coffee with semi-sweet chocolate, molasses in the background and toasted malts. Great beer

Bottle. Pours dark brown. Nice size creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Flavor of the same. Light palate. This is lighter then my ideal porter would be, but still solid. Very drinkable. My first from this brewery. Possibly they just started distributing to Michigan or at least my area. Based on this one I will definitely try more from Deschutes.

Poured from a bottle. Part of a blind taste test. No discernable taste. Very weak Porter, surprised at the high ratings.

A classic porter from Deschutes - they make some excellent beers but this is their standard right here. Has the familiar roasted malt and chocolate notes that you are expecting, but backed up with an acidic kick and hop notes that provide more depth to this than your average porter.
