With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

12 oz bottle. Pours a thick, inky black color with a nice tan head. Great lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, some peat, with some great cocoa notes. Flavor is similar, with a strong roasted malt backbone. I took a trip to Portland a few years ago and got acquainted with this beer. I recall sitting on my friend’s porch on Gladstone St. on a summer night, throwing back a couple of these. What a great beer.

2016.02.13-Deschutes Black Butte Porter-on tap at Tuscarora Mill. Meh. Ok, a bit thin, more roasts than I'd expect. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours brown with a big creamy beige head and nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, smoke, caramel, mocha. Sweet maltiness, notes of coffee, chocolate cake, cocoa, caramel, dark fruit, roasted grains, light acidity with dry finish. Medium-bodied, smooth and pleasant to drink. Nice.

Tap at Imazato. Dark brown pour with highlights. Aroma of roasted malt and light cocoa. Taste follows. Nicely carbonated, medium body, smooth drinking. Pretty much a textbook porter. Solid, easy drinking, decent flavour.

On tap at Imazato. Duchutes Black Butte Porter 5.4% deep cola black with roasty chocolate aroma. Med-light bodied with a raspy carbonation. The taste is chocolate bready oats. Very very solid stuff.

Bottle poured into a nonick pint. Pours a deep, dark brown with a hint of ruby and a cream colored head. Nice lacing. Milk and dark chocolate with a hint of roasted coffee to the nose. Very roasty at first with some cream and vanilla. A little hoppy on a mostly dry and malty finish. Creamy and smooth palate with just a bit of carbonation. Excellent. Just a great porter. Really drinkable and I?ll be back for more!
