Was expecting more from the ratings. Dark Chocolate and some roasty malts. Much more alcohol in the aroma and taste than I would have though from a 5.2%. Typical dark brown/black color with a moderately tan head.

Had on tap at brew pub in Bend. Clear but completely black except spots where light hits. Smells like roasted coffee. Tastes not thick, no lingering bitterness. Fizzy.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Had on tap at the brewpub, which might explain why it was more carbonated than expected. Nose of coffee and roasted malt, very typical of a porter. Chocolate less so than coffee. Very short finish. Consider a good introduction to darker beers for the uninitiated.

First introduction to Deschutes and I wasn't disappointed. Enjoyed on tap and beautifully poured into an imperial pint glass. Slight hop and roasted malt aroma up front. Midnight black with a beautiful creamy head reminiscent of a properly pulled espresso. I loved the slightly thicker mouthfeel was offset by a nice dry slightly hopped finish. Very reliable porter that kinda veers into stout territory. Definitely won't hesitate to order it again when I'm in the mood for something dark and mean.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown with a full and smooth khaki head. The aroma is full of coffee and roasted malts, along with lesser amounts of chocolate vanilla. The taste is a bit sweet. Chocolate is most pronounced here. There are still plenty of roasted malts, some nuttiness, coffee, and some light caramel. Mild chocolate aftertaste. I find this medium in body, with a more thin texture, and having some soft carbonation. Overall, this is a decent porter.

On tap at World of Beer (Charlottesville, VA). Aromas of coffee, licorice, cocoa, vanilla bean. Black with a somewhat lasting beige head. Mostly dry, flavors of vanilla, caramel, roasty. Medium bodied, very smooth.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
big two finger lite tan head and very pretty lacing.... brew is dark chestnut with mahogany highlites.
aroma is roasted grains and chocolate... and lite roasted cold coffee... not getting much if any hop aroma. some fruitiness.
solid medium body with a creamy lingering palate ... good amount of chocolate malt flavor and roasted grains.. again a slight fruitiness.
IMHO, this is a staple American porter.
