GreatLibations (1299), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Jul 7, 2008 Pours almost black w/ a tall frothy head that slowly recedes leaving a clasic lace behind as a testiment of its sturdy foundation. Strong aromas of espresso roast and dark chocolate. Full nectar w/ creamy residual effers. Moderately sweet w/ a dense malt backbone intermingled w/ a heavy roast component add extreme depth to this epic brew. Molasses, leather, chocolate charcoal, grilled chilli powder, black cherry, sweet coffee. The finish is long w/ subtle aspirin bittering and big charcoal essence. This brew is rich, generous, and warming w/ alcohol well hidden. No detectable Bourbon though. You don’t drink this beer, you chew on it. Very strong flavored. A dragon of a beer. zeke626 (221), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 31, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Bottle Trek. Pours a pitch black body with creamy, rich brown head. Aroma is initially dark malts, then coffee, bourbon, and cocoa. Complex flavor - I get dark roasted malts, cocoa, rich roasted coffee, and bourbon with hints of oak, vanilla, and caramel. Smooth, thick mouthfeel, yet not as heavy as some imperial stouts. Rich, slightly bitter, coffee finish. The coffee and bourbon flavors come out more as the beer warms. dwyerpg (2094), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jul 11, 2008 What a change from their Belgian wit! Smells a bit strongly of alcohol. Flavor is rich, strong, and an excellent blend of the competing elements. Roasty. A good strong finish. A top notch brew. kenb (945), Oregon, USA Jul 4, 2008 Updated: Jul 5, 200822 OZ bottle via Roth’s. Pours black with a huge brown head that takes up 75% of the mug and takes for ever to dissipate. Nose is chocolate, roasted barley, coffee. Taste as it smells. Starts and ends with lots of bittersweet coacoa, and in between there is some plums, licorice, coffee and bourban. The bourban lingers for a long while into the aftertaste. I also get a bit of smokiness from this. THe hops are there and balance the sweetness and roastiness quite well. Definately a west coast version. Very very well-done. As good as it gets. matt7215 (578), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Sep 13, 2008 bomber from a trade with suzygreenberg. pours black with a small tan head that leaves patchy foam and some lacing. aromas are nominated by roasted malt. chocolate, caramel, coffee and burbon. perfect flavour progression and silky smooth mouthfeel. i cant believe ben gave one of these up but im sure glad he did! a damn fine IMPERIAL PORTER!
