Sweet and chocolaty (semi sweet dark chocolate, that is), black with tiny beige head on tap at Payette’s Black Friday event. Lingering sweetness somewhat masks the the roast grain backbone of this beauty, slick and smooth with a slight afterglow. Perfect for a chilly evening.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Really good. It comes close to walking into stout territory. Roasted malt and bourbon aroma. Color was black with a thin tan head. Medium to heavy weight with good carbonation. The flavors have blended well over time. Roasted cocoa with a hint of coffee and moderate bourbon finish. The right amount I might add. Somewhat of a dryer finish than expected. I didn’t detect the orange they added though. Overall a welcoming porter and I was sad when it was gone.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A big sweet corpulent black beer with refreshing refreshing fruity flavors. Surprisingly drinkable.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed when over one year of age.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Nose is big dark malts mixed with light color fruits and a little something similar to used cigarette filter. Somewhat original and inviting aroma. Taste has vanilla beans, sponge cake, chocolate pudding, flour, blood oranges, other refreshing fruits, light notes of bourbon. The sweetness level is through the roof, this is a very sweet beer, even sweeter than most other beers of similar gravity. However despite the enormous sweetness there was also a lot of refreshing fruity flavors which greatly diminished the cloying sensation. The finish has a a refined flour (almost chalky) sensation that leaved a coated tongue. No alcohol presence whasoever. Extremely full body with plenty of carbonation, a very sumptuous mouthfeel. Strangely easy to drink despite the high sweetness, I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would. Sometimes I love a very sweet beer beer, sometimes I hate a very sweet beer, I’m probably the most mentally deranged person I’ve ever argued with.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is cocoa, chocolate, orange, smells exactly like one of those chocolate orange things, with some bourbon as well. Taste is heavy bourbon up front, considerably more than the aroma suggests, with the chocolate and orange taking a backseat, although still present. Finish is bitter, slightly alcoholic with a little of the orange lingering. Full bodied, soft carbonation, silky creamy texture. Good, but I’d prefer a non-bourbon version of this.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is fairly toasty with some chocolate notes as well. Light, sweet orange accents and some light bourbon character. Surprisingly has a low earthy hop aroma. More chocolate as it warms and less hops. Hints of caramel and toffee as it warms as well.
Pours a very dark brown but it isn’t quite black with a thick dark tan/light mocha head that slowly but steadily thins and recedes. Medium lacing and moderate legs. A slight head lingers on the edges with some film in the center.
Flavor is fairly sweet and instantly dominated by chocolate. Moderate orange character hits mid palate with a light, complimentary bourbon note. Roast is lighter than in the aroma and I do not pick up any hop flavor. Medium light bitterness and moderate alcohol spice in the finish. The flavor is similar to eating a chocolate orange while sipping on bourbon, but chocolate lingers more. Lots of lingering bitter chocolate as it warms.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Very low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth.
Overall a really nice big porter. The chocolate really comes through but the bourbon and orange kind of hide the natural ester notes that I would expect to find in a porter. This has aged well and I am happy to report that I did not lose a finger while removing the wax.
