4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. This seems to be a nice deviation from the previous Black Butte editions. Pours a deep dark brown with black center. Generous tan head formation that persists throughout the entire glass. Sticky lacing gives off the aromas of cocoa, roasted coffee bean and earthy peat. The citrus has a subtle presence. Flavor is slammin’ good; loaded with chocolate and blackened malts. Again the orange citrus shows through on the back end, with the bitterness complemented with a spicy bite from the added chiles. Only downside is the spiciness has a synergistic effect on the alcohol burn, knocking down the finish. A bit more balance and this sh*t would be stellar!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured from tap to glass. Dark hue with creamy brown head that settled to a ring. Aroma is toffee, caramel, cinnamon, roast, cereal, chocolate. Mouthfeel is nice with a full body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet with a spicy following and slight ethanol finish. Overall this is drinking very well right now.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
bottle via trade. Thanks duffman!
Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, slight bourbon. Mouthfeel is very delicate and velvety. Slight hint of bourbon. Extremely complex, with delicate taste layers. Balance is the key word here. Exceptional brew.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap @ Beveridge Place for Black Butte Reserve XXII - XXVI vertical. Pours dark blackish brown with medium mocha head that fades quickly to a light lacy one. Aroma is dark roasty chocolate malt, quickly overtaken by boozy barrel-aged notes and a rich, lightly sweet, not cloying orange flavor. Taste is similar: lots of rich dark chocolate, prominent but restrained cocoa notes, orange liqueur flavor throughout, and a light but unmistakable pepper spice note that lingers through the finish with a slight tingle on the tongue. Some bourbon, but moderated with the age here. Very impressive. Easily one of the best in the Black Butte Reserve series. The orange and chili combo is much better suited to this style than some of the subsequent variations.

Bottle from my cellar. Brown pour, pretty thin. No head. Rally nice nose: bourbon, malt and oak. Quite tasty. Bourbon is not overpowering. Good bitter chocolate finish.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
"scored a couple notches lower than previous releases. this was great as well, but a bit sweeter than previous versions. in a small sample it wouldn’t be noticeable, but have a pint or bottle to yourself, and it becomes ever so slightly cloying. the usual suspects are there, cocoa, coffee, bourbon (though more subtle), with added orange peel and pepper. the pepper is barely noticeable, but is there a little in the finish (not in the aroma at all) and while the orange peel is nice, it takes away from other subtle nuances of the beer, hence the lower score. still a great beer, and one i’ll age as well."

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz. bottle via group trade. Pours black with a medium sized frothy tan head. The aroma is roasted malts with dark chocolate, oak, bourbon, cocoa nibs, vanilla, some mild orange character and light coffee. One word to describe the flavor is BIG. This has decadent chocolate, creamy vanilla, roasted malt, mellow bourbon and oak, orange, some dark fruit, cocoa, and flashes of the 11% as it warms. For all of that, the balance is surprising. Full creamy body. Solid.
