Pleasant aroma with lots of chocolate, molasses, a little raisin.. quite creamy, coats the palate, velvety, rich & warming, leans rather sweet. Finishes very sweetly. Lush & enjoyable, good, tasty, but lacked the top-tier complexity I hoped for.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 writerljberg (242) - Oregon, USA - NOV 22, 2012
22oz bottle from Beermongers. Split 4 ways.
A: Pure black with some broken light on the edges. Thin off-creme lacing. Nice legs.
N: Sweet alcoholic chocolate. Lots of raisins and figs. Prune and malted milk. Very dense. Pronounced ethanol in the mixture. Dates are also prominent.
T: The nose knows. Chocolate, fudge, malted milk. Lots of fig, prune, raisin, and date. This is a much better mixture than last year. Cinnamon and allspice. Graham cracker. This is nicely complex.
M: Medium heavy. Not as thick as I’d like, and enough alcohol to detract.
O: This is one of the best vintages, if you like dark fruits and chocolate. Highly recommended, especially if you’ve never had XX.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 arrogantb (1398) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 22, 2012
22oz bottle $12. I thought this went up another dollar but apparently I paid $13 for the BBXXIII. Black Butte XX was $9 or $10 and that was fair, this is a rip off. I thought last year’s was a little more interesting than this one. I don;t think they’re putting coffee in this anymore because I can’t taste any. The figs give a weird flavor, sort of sweet but odd followed by a strong porter. I really wish this was more viscous and more chocolate. Its sort of thin and doesn’t really impress. Hopefully I’m smart enough to not but this next year, I’d rather spend an extra buck or two and get something from Firestone Walker that isn’t just partially barrel aged.
