XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

Bomber. Pours opaque black with a small foamy head that fades quickly to a bubbly ring. Big dark chocolate aroma with some maple, dark fruit, and sort of cookie sweetness. Taste is fairly sweet, very little bitterness. Nice dark chocolate flavor with some light roast and dark fruit. Not very complex but pretty tasty. Smooth finish, some tobacco too. Thin to medium body, silky and a little oily mouthfeel. A big tasty imperial porter.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear near black with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of raisin with sweet dark grains and a bit of chocolate. Flavor has a good amount of raisin and sweet dark grains with a backing note of sweet chocolate.

Bottle shared by a friend. Pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate and roast. Malty and chocolatey flavor with dark fruit accents before a roasty finish.

Bottle, opened 7/19/13 four days before the ’best after’ date... oh well. Very dark brown pour with a creamy two fingers of tan head. Roast and chocolate in the nose, along with a little added sweetness that I suspect comes from the dates and figs. Given that I haven’t had a date or fig in several years, this fruity/beral spiciness must be their affect. It goes well with the dark cocoa and roasty notes... too well; it was very easy to power through my first glass. Overall very enjoyable.

Bottle 22fl.oz.

Clear dark black brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coffee. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130223]

Wow, what more can you say? This is one awesome beer. This imperial stout goes overboard on the flavors and is one of my favorites. Can’t wait to try the XXV and compare.

Bottle thanks to Dave. Pours out a dark brown/almost black with a small white head. Aroma is lots of chocolate, some mild roast, alcohol, molasses, some brownie mix. Taste is lots of chocolate, sweet cake mix, light molasses, some alcohol, sweet, malty notes, light licorice, full mouthfeel.

22oz bomber via trade. Poured a good looking thicker viscous pitch black body with a foamy 1/2 inch deep beige foamy head. Aroma was the weakest part of this beer, notes of figs, black berries, dark toast, light chocolate. Palate is great, fuller bodied with average carbonation and milky mouth feel. Flavor is better than the aroma, anise, burnt malts, dark chocolate, figs, burnt berries. Good stuff.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out dates and figs upfront, followed by cocoa. Flavour brings out a wonderful blend of dried fruits and cocoa upfront, with a touch of coconut and a little vanilla. The fruit and cocoa are the dominant flavours. Quite full-bodied, with a rich lingering finish. Not as good as the previous anniversary versions, but certainly very good.
