4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz, black waxed bottle, via trade. pours a hazy, deep brown that sits almost black in the glass capped by a lively, dark khaki head that leaves sticky rings of lace. aroma is excellent, certainly one of a kind, with huge notes of sweet, dried figs, candied dates, and licorice backed by cherry cola, dark chocolate, and fruitcake with subtle hints of winter spices, wet wood, and earth. flavor is wonderful as well and follows the aroma nicely with more sweet, dried figs, fig newtons, black cherries, heavy licorice, and ash backed by rich dark chocolate, dark rum, and a heavy dose of roast on the finish. palate is medium bodied and silky smooth with a touch of heat. overall, another wonderful edition of the black butte anniversary series.

Deschutes Black Butte XXIV 9/24/12 notes: bottle. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is roasts with a fair degree of mixed dried fruit, fig is noticeable. Mouthfeel a touch light with mild effervescence. Flavor tempers Black Buttes ashy-roasty components with fruitiness, lightness. Always a treat, this year’s version doesn’t round out as nicely as I recall previous year’s batches.
