4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle from Beermongers. Split 4 ways.
A: Pure black with some broken light on the edges. Thin off-creme lacing. Nice legs.
N: Sweet alcoholic chocolate. Lots of raisins and figs. Prune and malted milk. Very dense. Pronounced ethanol in the mixture. Dates are also prominent.
T: The nose knows. Chocolate, fudge, malted milk. Lots of fig, prune, raisin, and date. This is a much better mixture than last year. Cinnamon and allspice. Graham cracker. This is nicely complex.
M: Medium heavy. Not as thick as I’d like, and enough alcohol to detract.
O: This is one of the best vintages, if you like dark fruits and chocolate. Highly recommended, especially if you’ve never had XX.

22oz bottle $12. I thought this went up another dollar but apparently I paid $13 for the BBXXIII. Black Butte XX was $9 or $10 and that was fair, this is a rip off. I thought last year’s was a little more interesting than this one. I don;t think they’re putting coffee in this anymore because I can’t taste any. The figs give a weird flavor, sort of sweet but odd followed by a strong porter. I really wish this was more viscous and more chocolate. Its sort of thin and doesn’t really impress. Hopefully I’m smart enough to not but this next year, I’d rather spend an extra buck or two and get something from Firestone Walker that isn’t just partially barrel aged.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Pangaea Bottle Shop. Pours very dark brown/black with a foamy tan head. Aromas of dark fruit and chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is dark chocolate alternating with dark fruits. It’s darkly bitter. The burnt malt is smooth. Heat is not an issue. The fruits engender an ache in the saliva glands. I think I’ve had something similar, but? This is pretty good stuff.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The 22oz black waxed bomber pours very dark with a full firm mocha colored head of foam. The aroma delivers sweet bourbon, chocolate malt balls, black strap molasses and as it warmed more and more boozy bourbon like notes. Wow, the taste is rich and full and lingers for days. I get smooth bourbon and sugary bourbon hard candy moving into black strap molasses and a black patent like burnt note. Damn, this is a sipper for sure and I poured too much as the bourbon like booze notes build up quickly and become too much before long. Behind those notes is a pleasing oasis consisting of dark chocolate, a bit of coconut and vanilla as well as prune to date to fig like sweet dark fruity esters. Nice sipper for sure.

Nose has a roasted barley, cocoa nibs, soya sauce, coffee, vanilla, bourbon and oak. As it opens up you get red fruit/plum. The pallet has boozy bourbon, cocoa nibs, dates and has a long bitter coffee finish.

Bomber. Pours black with a tan head. Nose of chocolate, bourbon and oak. Taste is big on chocolate with some bourbon and licorice. Mouthfeel is creamy with some bitterness. Some alcohol burn noticeable. A big beer which was good for a cold night like tonight.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a solid darkest brown with coffee head that vanishes to a ring. Aroma is blunted by being poured too cold but notes of plum and fig are there along with a hint of black licorice. Taste is more cocoa, coffee with brown sugar. Slightly lactic. Alcohol well hidden. Finish is bitter, warming and tart. Wonderful.
