Tap. Pours opaque dark brown with a medium brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves great lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and a bit of vanilla. Flavor about the same, plus kahlua, molasses, and dried fruit. Medium sweet, lightly bitter and quite alcoholic in the warming finish. Full bodied and creamy. Complexity and nuances come out as it warms.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Served on-tap at the Austin Flying Saucer.
Appearance: Dark, opaque black. Thin beige head that settled quickly.
Aroma: Dark chocolate, dark fruits, roasted coffee-like malts.
Taste: Dark chocolate, cocoa. Figs come out more clearly. Roasted malts give espresso-like flavor. Slight hop bitterness appears as well. Alcohol bite is noticeable.
Palate: Thick, creamy, and viscous.
Overall: As I was unable to only buy 1 bottle, I was really glad to be able to sample this fresh on tap. I’m really looking forward to see what a year of cellaring does to this one. Extremely enjoyable fresh, though.

22 ounce thanks to beerandfishin. Big roasty pour. Taste is total chocolate. Some fine bitterness. The figs had a touch of sweet to the roast. Really tasty. A big beer.

Pours dark black with a tanned head. Nose of caramel and some darker notes. Heavy dark notes of roasted dark coffee, chocolate. Intense, with a thick mouth feel, and some alcohol taste. Not bad, but a bit intense for me.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap pours thick black with of white head. The smell is rich roasted grain and a touch of booze. The taste is mostly simple porter with a great bit of alcohol. Some dark fruit comes and goes with the grain and alcohol dictating most all of the taste. There is a bitter chocolate that blends with the dates and figs but it all ends at either roasted grain or the warming alcohol. Enjoyable but posing the limits of the black butte for sure.

10 oz draft at Martin City Brewing Company, Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a black brown, murky, with a small tan head. The aroma is a bunch of bourbon, sweet malt, clove, and a vanilla sweetness. There is a hint of wood. The taste shows a bunch of bourbon right off, followed by alcohol sweetness, floral clove, then woodiness. Finally a touch of roast and vanilla shows. All throughout, there is a hot alcohol, particularly in the finish. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, with the super hot finish.

Bottle brought home from the brewery by my friend Johnny. Aroma of chocolate nibs and coffee. Flavor is complex and includes the chocolate nibs, coffee, and dark fruit flavors. This one is definitely a sipper.

On tap @ the brewpub in Bend. Opaque black-brown, with a finely bubbled brown head. Aromas of treacle, vanilla, coffee, and vague dark fruits. Richly flavoured, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, dates, soft oaky undertones, nuances of raisins and a hint of aniseed. Outstanding, as usual.
