XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

651mL thanks to the Dfromson crew. Clear sepia pour. Weak head. Nose is meaty, herbal, sage, rendered fat. Taste is sharply herbal, black pepper, small orange and grapefruit juice bitterness. Very delicious- almost Black IPA. Lighter, hop forward. So sticky sweetness. Yum. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thanks to Dixonian for this one. Aroma is dry, earthy chocolate, some roast, fudge, a touch of bourbon, citrus hops. Pour is dark brown with an off-white head. Flavor matches the aroma with a bitter quality to it. Tons of chocolate and roast, some citrus hops, dark fruits. Good stuff but I want to try it again in 6 months.

Appearance - Deep cloudy brown, soft lacing
Aroma - Smoke, cherries, hops, chocolate, oak
Taste - Hoppy, dry, fruity, earthy, roasted malts, mellow vanilla and oak

Shared by the oh-so-generous OmegaX - thanks friend. This year’s version has a rich porter character, and the oak helps the smooth dry body. Overall pretty fresh and roasty, perhaps aging would mellow this one out a bit.

Bottle: The aroma consists of heavy chocolate, lighter roast, and a touch of smoke. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small beige head that quickly fades to a thin ring. The flavor starts with a chocolate and caramel. The finish has light-moderate vanilla, coconut, and a touch of whiskey. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Dark fruit, dark chocolate, alcohol, a little bitterness. Molassess and brown sugar as well. Black pour, brown head, nice staying power. Flavors of dark fruit up front, molassess, dark chocolate, a little aerthy bitterness. Smooth with good residual sugar and body. Alcohol notes show through as well. Pleasant drink.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours dark brown with thin tan head. Aromas of dark roasted malts, chocolate and dark fruits. Flavors of sweet figs, bitter dark chocolate, roasted malts, and molasses. Medium to full body with minimal carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Not nearly as good as the XXI or XXIII. Thanks Craig.

Tap: Dark brown with a small tan head. Choco-malt, alcohol, and mild nuts. Sweet flavors of bitter chocolate and definitely alcohol. Thin body but it leaves a thick film on the tongue. Quite tasty.

Molasses aroma. Espresso black with tan head and lacing for days. The first sip is a flavor explosion of coffee, chocolate, molasses, honey. Very slight bitterness at the finish. This is an amazing beer.

Cherry, dark fruits, roasted malt, chocolate, and slight hint of cream soda on the nose. Thick black pour, with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. The figs really come through on the pallette, with a rich, sweet onset, which blends into a chocolatey bitter finish. As it warms up to room temperature, the bitter, chocolate flavours come to the fore. Satisfying pallette, very slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Overall, an incredible beer, easily the best porter I have yet tasted, and on a par with the best dark beers around.
