COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

Great aroma beautifully black pour. Great beer all around. It did have very apparent alcohol. This was by far the oldest beer I’ve consumed. It was on New Year’s eve and was a great way to bring in the new year.

Pour is pitch black and is covered by a tiny offwhite rim of foam. This foam leaves fair lacing. Aroma of booze, licorice and cassonade. Taste is sweet and spicy, licorice being the main offender. Some alcohol heat. Flavors of chocolate and dark fruits. Body is full, mouthfeel creamy. Decadent, Boozy and roasty finish. Really drinkable for such a beast. If I could I would just tone down the licorice a little, otherwise it is a great (and festive) drink! Happy New Year! Bonne année!

Darkest black with a neat greay tan head that disappears once your back is turned. Sweet prune and figgy rich wholesome nose, lightly charred and a smudge of booziness. Silky as you’d expect for the mouthfeel, leading an initial taste of tarred chocholate and sprigs of sweetness with strumming roast - thread of booze tang throughout. Finish of chewed liquorice drippings and neat bitter roast but a bit of an over-sweet boozy linger.

Bottle, Cheers Paul!, November in December Tasting

Bottle: dark ruby & deep brown body with a khaki colored head that leaves mild lacing behind. Aroma is bursting with dried dark fruits; figs, dates, bruised prunes. Lots of sweetness & booziness is apparent with mild cocoa in the back end. Heavy alcohol aroma - much heavier than expected. Taste is also quite boozy & very raisin/fig heavy. Occasional roasted malt & cocoa, but mostly booze soaked figs, raisins, dates, various dark fruit. Slight hint of burnt sugar mouth coating. I don’t love this like everyone else... Too much dark fruit & surprisingly boozy (even at 11% ABV, you can expect some alcohol, but this had an unpleasant whiskey burn).

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours jet black with tan head. Aromas are dark chocolate, dried fruits, rich and inviting. Taste is more dark chocolate and roasted bitterness and dark fruit sweet. Full bodied, creamy texture, long finish. Lovely stuff.

on tap at PDX pub Black ale with a transient mocha quilt atop the oil. With swirl the foam makes an appearance. The nose on this bitch does not disappoint: vanilla, cocoa, dates with figs less so, hint of sweet alcohol with whiskey notations - a rich nose. Flavor carries the cocoa as a baseline for me, layered with light cafe, sweet booze (not as hot as the nose), the dates carry through and the finish accents the figs. The body is silky, full and warming. The breath back is full and sensual. I would put this inside me again, and I will. Serving type: on-tap 08-09-2012
