Cumming GA Tasting. Group trade bottle. Spicy cinnamon, anise, dark chocolate, some dark fruits, thick molasses. This was a nice brew, but the hint of anise and overwhelming cinnamon were a bit too much for me.

Pours a warm, deep sable with a yellowish tan head. Strong aroma has roast malt, caramel and toffee notes. Flavor delights with caramel, coffee and fruity notes, no doubt from the figs and dates. Thick, heavy and fairly fizzy texture leaves a sweet, caramel and fruity finish.

Black wax covered bomber purchased 18 months ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($16.99). Pours dark brown with a finger and a half of light brown foam. AROMA of complex stewed dark fruits, cocoa powder, burnt malts, and some fresh-brewed vanilla coffee. FLAVOR of hard roasted dark malts, smoky dark artisan chocolate, sticky dark fruit (perhaps figs and/or dates), some quality coffee, vanilla, and anise. Very roasty with only a hint of sweetness, and finishing with a good amount of roasty-bitterness. Surprisingly soft and creamy mouthfeel. The high ABV is impressively hidden here. Quite nice and somehow fitting on a rainy and "chilly" San Diego evening. (279, 847)

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2014 On draught at Lucky Labrador for the 17th Annual Barleywine and Big Beer Festival 3/1/14. Pitch black with dark tan head. Aroma of dates, plums, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt. Taste is similar to aroma but with cocoa nib, toffee, and bourbon notes as well. For such a big beer, it finishes very smooth, with a wonderful multilayered dessert-like aftertaste. On draught at Deschutes Brewery & Public House, Portland, for their 26th Anniversary 6/27/14. Potent bourbon, dark chocolate, and date notes. Amazingly complex yet balanced at the same time.

On draught at lucky lab big beer festival - pours dark brown with sustaining medium tan head. Nose of brown sugar, caramel, and malt. Complex taste of plums, malt, sweet caramel, and yeast. Very nice dessert beer.

22oz bottle thanks to dbuckingham, thanks! Pours pitch black with a two finger brown head and lacing in the glass, aroma is very roasty, lots of roasted malt with a ton of chocolate and sweetness, a little bit of booze comes through, the flavor has a ton of dark chocolate on the front end with a kick of booze and caramel in the finish, a little bit of burn and it for sure warms the belly up, nice for a cold night in Wisconsin.

22 oz. bottle. Shared by Phatdog1. Date on label reads best after 7/23/2013. If you sampled this before that, you served this brew an in justice. Deep black with real thin tan head. No lace. Nose is lighter than the bold flavor. Dark fruit and chocolate. The flavor shows anise, burnt malts, dark chocolate, figs, burnt sugar. I also get traces of cinnamon. The other 4 people drinking thought I was off on that but… some type of sweet spice. Even some sort of bitterness to help off-set all the sweetness. Medium-full bodied and silky smooth texture. Very nice.

Draft at Fiddler’s Inn a few weeks back. Pours black as night. Thick tan head, dense and creamy. Lacing galore. Aroma: chocolate, chili (?!), cherry, dark fruit. Is this really 24, or is it 25? Smells almost astringent - 8 oz thank goodness. Also, glad I walked. Taste: follows nose. Booze apparent. Am I a heretic to prefer regular Black Butte to this? (Side note: my phone autocorrects BB to "BBomb," which I’m happy to see). Lingering chocolate, but astringent roast flavor I don’t like in beers like The 1st Nail and Huna. Full body, rich and sorta one dimensional. Do I expect this to improve with age? Not really. Do I want to drink my bottles now? Not really. Sigh. Screw you and your "best after" bullshit, Deschutes. Going to think twice before buying bottles with a best after date from you folks again. Full body, thick, chewy texture. Sweet, but not cloying. Bitterness eventually at end. I don’t really care for this.

On tap at Belmont Station in Portland. Black pour. Chocolate malty aroma with licorice and a spicy cardamom-like flavor. Taste rich and moderately sweet with a noted bitterness to balance. Medium mouthfeel. Nice.
