COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dates, figs and chocolate. Black currants, barrel-aged in bourbon casks. The result is an Imperial Porter with a tart berry and chocolate aroma with luscious layers of dried fruit, oak and vanilla. A fitting tribute to the 25th Anniversary of our flagship beer.

As expected, this is a solid black beer, with a thin, whipped egg-like whitish/light brown head. Roasted malts only highlight the mature, complex, classy, sweet, and definitley alcohol-laden nose. This has an extremely well-blended aroma. In the mouth is where the real magic happens, though. Itís even more complex, with a very woody, almost Scotch-like Belgian earthy fruitiness that echoes a little of a liquor - perhaps a brandy or rum. Maybe a whiskey, but the sweetness makes me lean more toward a brandy. I think. Anyway, you get the picture. Yes, alcohol is very much in play here. Itís so complex that each sip almost tastes different than the previous. Sticky on the lips, and although it makes you grimace a little in the finish, itís only to manage the roasted, sweet alcoholic harshness (which canít be a bad thing, right?). I really love this. Itís hard to make a really unique imperial porter or stout nowadays, but this is one of those that really makes the cut.

Pours a deep brown colour, pretty much black, with a creamy beige head. Aroma is of roasted barley, slight chocolate and some coffee. Taste is mildly sweet throughout with a subtle dry bitterness; quite balanced. Medium body, smooth on the palate, and soft carbonation. Overall an awesome porter, really enjoyable overall.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours a jet black color with a medium brown head. A big sweet sugary nose with coffee and cocoa. The flavor is rich berries, oak, tannins, coffee, roast, more dark fruit, oil, some cocoa, vanilla. Very complex big beer. A mostly slick oily palate. Very big. One of my favorites so far. The currants donít distract at all. Finishes dry with anise and pepper.

Bottle. Pour is a dark brown, nearly black with tan head. Tons of dark druit, cocoa and some nice hints of oak. Sweet, but not cloying. Good roasted malts, chocolate and vanilla. Really a nice beer, should pick up some more!

Bottle to snifter. Nose is big time fruits. Tons of dates and figs flood the palate with a light berry/currant note. Chocolate and cocoa hide behind the big fruity notes. Pour is black with an off-white head. Flavor is mainly big fruits, dried dates, currant goodness, sweet malts, chocolate, light roast. A touch of bourbon rounds it out. A bit too sweet to be top notch but itís still pretty damn good.

Black pour from 22oz bottle from blackwells. Chocolate and nutty taste. Crazy smooth and drinkable. Subtle fruit notes. Delicious.

On tap at Ground Control. Pours a moderate dark brown. Huge, complex aroma of anise, molasses, bitterroot, burnt bark, very roasted chocolate malt, lots of booze, and an odd hoppy note at the end. Sharp taste of burnt malt, smooth dark chocolate, oak, some licorice and figs, and a touch of vinegar and sour mash for a hot finish. Very smooth palate initially before it turns to a sharp, astringent texture. OK, but not my favorite Black Butte Anniversary.

On tap at Beermongers in Portland. Black pour with dinner tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, malt; Sweet raisin, creamy, warm, roast, vanilla. Light tart vibe. Great beer. Just had one of these from couple years ago and like this fresh tap one better.

Bomber from Bev4Less. Thanks Freddy! Pours a lovely obsidian, minimal foam head. What there is is pale brown sugar color and rims the glass. Aromas are all figs and dark fruits, with just a touch of the black currant. Itís in the first sip that all that complexity comes through, followed, and complemented beautifully, by the cocoa nibs. Lovely semi-oily mouthfeel and wonderful balance... really. This is amazing stuff. Deschutes, I take my hand off to you. With this beer, I could fade into bolivian...
