COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dates, figs and chocolate. Black currants, barrel-aged in bourbon casks. The result is an Imperial Porter with a tart berry and chocolate aroma with luscious layers of dried fruit, oak and vanilla. A fitting tribute to the 25th Anniversary of our flagship beer.

Large format bottle with black wax thanks to errl. Pours a darker brown to black with a beige head of foam. Fruity, blackcurrant, wet wood, some soggy toast. Toasty sweet in the taste. Bigger beer. This is one tasty, complex beer.

Bomber poured into snifter. Pours pitch black with very little white head that dissipates into a collar. Spotty lacing. Aroma is bourbon, currant, dark fruit, malt, light coffee on the tail. Flavor is notable bourbon, roasted malt, milk chocolate, dark fruit. I was apprehensive about this, but it’s quite delicious. I’d love to age one for a year or so.

Draft at Capone’s. Pours thick and hazy dark oily jet black color with minimal off-white head. Nose is roasty malt, cacao, plum, vanilla, oak. Tastes malty, very rich and complex, with notes of plum, blackberry, cacao, vanilla, assertive and well integrated oak, and a delicious finish. This one is stellar.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. Rich chocolate, dark fruits, burnt sugar. This is a rich, dark stone fruit treat. This finishes dry enough to be very drinkable. The alcohol can be noticeable but not out of balance.

I was a little apprehensive about trying Deschutes’ second unicorn as Abyss disappointed. This beer is a marvel. Very warming booziness up front. I really taste the bourbon and the currant. Pour is purple-black with little head and very little lacing. Very fine carbonation and soft mouthfeel. Chocolate more pronounced as it warms. Red wine tannic qualities that improve the beer. Very complex. I wish I had another bottle to age for a year or so.

On tap at the Draught House. Black pour with a brown head. The aroma and flavor are exactly what I expected. I get a lot of heavily roasted malt and chocolate as well as some nice bourbon barrel notes - oak, vanilla, light maple and whiskey. There is also a hint of dark fruit as well as some pepper. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

On tap at Hills It’s dark with a little less opacity as previous years, some tan ringlets. Smells of oak, coffee, toasted malts, soil and a little grape pith. Flavor is booze, coffee grounds, oak, tart beer, some dark grape skins, tannic and not very good to me. Medium on full bodied with moderate carb and a bit of a acidic character, quite dry finish. I’m probably not gonna be buying many bottles of this, if any. Sigh. Deschutes is losing their punch for me.

Toasted malt aroma; inky black appearance with foamy tan head; okay caramel taste; silky on the palate with a light fizz and a quick bitter finish; overall, a fantastic porter ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle:   Deep dark brown, thin to moderate frothy beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Roasty nose, faint alcohol, dark chocolate, soft oak and even softer vanilla.   Not as strong or sweet as I would have thought.   Oddly enough, as the description states, this one is very similar.   Black currant, bourbon, dark chocolate, oak, and some vanilla.   Very flavorful and interesting, but not as much body as I would have hoped.   Good, but needs to be richer, and a tad bit sweeter.   Perhaps that would come with the increase in body?   Good, but not great.
