COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dates, figs and chocolate. Black currants, barrel-aged in bourbon casks. The result is an Imperial Porter with a tart berry and chocolate aroma with luscious layers of dried fruit, oak and vanilla. A fitting tribute to the 25th Anniversary of our flagship beer.

Taster at Standard Market during a Monday Deschutes Tap Takeover. I got to compare this to a XXIV, rare opportunity for anniversary beers for me. This one looked just a little lighter. Nose of sherry and vanilla over dark roasted malt. The taste has a pronounced cherry cola note absent in the XXIV, but it cuts across the dark roast malts. Besides the sherry notes, this tips a bit to a red wine taste, too. So much stuff going on here that I didn’t catch the bourbon notes I usually find in a BBA beer. Probably that is helping to bring up more of the fruity character from the dates and figs.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle. Aroma is fairly chocolate forward with a balanced roast note in the background. Nice berry and cherry character with some prunes, raisins and figs as well. Some light oak and bourbon notes with medium light alcohol spice. Hints of anise. Pours black with a bit of dark brown highlights on the edges and a medium sized, moderately thick, dark tan head with average retention. Medium light lacing and moderate legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with moderate chocolate and light roast character. Quite a bit of berry and dark fruit character including cherries, currants, figs, prunes and plums. The fruitiness adds a bit of sweetness mid palate. Some more light roast notes with light tobacco and leather. Moderate bitterness with light oak and medium light bourbon. Light alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with a bit of a slick, oily character and medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice imperial porter with a ton of chocolate character and nice nice dark fruit and berry notes. Nice complexity with light bourbon and oak notes.

Tap. Heavy malt notes of toasted, dark chocolate and mild coffee, light herbs and earth for the hops and yeast, with dark dried fruits, wood, vanilla and milk. Head is small, wispy, tan with no lacing but good legs and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown yet still clear. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy, with a lively carbonation and a lightly astringent finish. Great tasting and nice feeling Strong Porter.

"I’ve really liked past incarnations of this brew, but like abyss, thought the tweaks they’ve started to make were not for the better. This year, though, i was excited that they upped the bourbon barreling to 50% of the blend. I was simultaneously worried about the addition of more fruit, especially the black currants (12.5% of the blend, slighltly soured too I read somewhere)...and I was right to be. The extra bourbon is completely covered up by the fruit and the tartness clashes with instead of compliments the decadence of the base beer and the bourbon. Not that it doesn’t work some. It’s delicious, but it’s also my least favorite BB Anniversary blend since they started bottling these 5 years ago."

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co, as a rare acquisition from the distributor. Dispensed to a snifter with a darkest brown color that showed mahogany highlighting at the base, a modest layer of tan head foam that produced a persistent ring & film, and clingy spots of lacing. The nose was quite roasted, with cocoa, some barrel induced vanilla, ready alcohol, but mainly dark fruit as cherry & prune. These notes were similar in the flavor, as the alcohol expressed it’s bourbony nature, the dark fruit remained dominant, some tannic astringency was present, and the texture was silky on the tongue. Medium to full bodied, with soft carbonation. Very smooth and sipable.

Pour is dark brown, almost black, with a good bit of light brown head. Nose has a bit of licorice, medium roast, sugary berry sweetness and a touch of green apple. Taste is roasty mid palate, heavy berry sweetness and a touch of green apple. Mild acidity and an extremely full creamy body.

From notes, consumed 8/4/2013. 22 oz bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Black with a finger of tan head. Good lacing. Aromas of tart fruit, cocoa, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, caramel, coconut. Tastes of nice bourbon, cocoa, dark chocolate, dark fruit and berries.

Black Butte 25 was consumed in Late August 2014, a few months after the ’best after’ date. Pours thick and black, with a rich tan head. Aroma is complex, of malts, chocolate, currant, and dark fruits. Taste is of bourbon, oak, vanilla with a bit of chocolate. Very good and balanced, complex but drinkable. Thumbs way up here. This is a great imperial porter.

Bottle, shared at RBAG by heavyleavy, and enjoyed again more recently. Hearty near black pour, ruby depths. Heaps of bitter chocolate, soft dark fruits, black cherry, oaky vanilla. Rich and delicious.

Bottle with about a year on it, with the XXIV. Some red wine character on the nose from the currants, and some brooding dark fruit/red wine on the finish too. Much leaner in mouthfeel and richness than the XXIV at this point with still pretty heavy bitter hop character.
