Good porter. Here is what Superspak thinks of the regular, " 12 ounce bottle, best by 10/03/11. Pours clear dark brown color with a small, fairly dense 1 finger off white head with good retention that reduces to a ring of lacing. A small bit of lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of big caramel, roasted malt, dark fruits, chocolate, and vanilla. Decent aromas with decent strength. Taste of tons of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, bitter coffee, and some vanilla. Decent amount of bitterness on the finish that lingers with chocolate, coffee, and roasted flavors. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a nice creamy and smooth mouthfeel. A small amount of prickliness from the carbonation, but does not detract from the mouthfeel. Very smooth and easy drinking. No alcohol noticed in the taste or finish as expected. Overall, a very nice porter; my first from Deschutes as well."

Bomber thanks to the didactic AndyReynolds. Nose is vanilla, wood, dark berries, molasses, and roast. Sip adds nothing. Iíve never seen a "best after" date on beer. That is weird. Why sell something that is not mature yet? Sweet and canít detect the high IBUs. Would be interesting to try when itís mature. Oh well.

Good but not the best in the series. Bourbon and sweet malt aroma. Very dark brown with with a small head. Full and heavy palate. Very smooth. Fruit flavors mixed with bourbon. Finishes with a slight hops and chocolate/coffee presence. Nice sipper.

Dark mahogany pour with a dense beige head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, molasses, and berries. Taste follows the nose with the addition of chocolate in the finish and aftertaste. Light tartness and alcohol warmth. Layers of flavor. Medium body. My favorite of the set so far.

Aroma is cherries, bourbon, oak, raisin, vanilla and cocoa. Black as night, off white/tan foamy head that sticks to the side throughout. Taste is wood, cedar, raspberry, fruits yet massive chocolate. Just caught some tobacco on the Nose and some heavy whipped cream and cocoa on the tongue. It is a crazy big and ever changing flavorful beer. 22oz bottle poured at home. Yum!

Bottle from Binnyís South Loop. Shared at my Summer Plunder Tasting. Wow what a complex aroma of cocoa nibs, bourbon, sweet pomegranate just great stuff. Medium bodied with a soft round mouthfeel and the flavor is much more sour than anticipated. Itís sour tangy cranberry, oaky vanilla bourbon, cocoa dark chocolate and pomegranate - wonderfully complex. It is great stuff and was the star of our tasting.

Talk about setting high expectations. My first batch of Black Butte XXVI was a bit young, but it gave me a good idea of what to expect. Chocolate notes are big and plenty spicy - I imagine theyíll become more rich and mellow over a few months. I also expect the fruit and wood influences to heighten after some time in the cellar. For now, theyíre subdued but nicely balanced. Booze warmth and coffee flavors are definitely present. The coffee bitterness and fruity tartness are a great match. Iíll expect a lot of this brew when I get to have it next but I doubt Iíll be disappointed.

Tried to get ícuteí with this one. Pomegranate molasses and Oregon cranberries? Maintain the strong cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and bourbon-soaked woodiness and youíll be good. Instead, the ingredients leveraged this year add a light sourness, ripe berry, and juice. Not needed and actually takes away from the base beer. A diminishing fan of the series.
