Hop Henge Experimental IPA is our annual exercise in IBU escalation. An outrageous amount of Centennial and Cascade hops are added to each barrel, with a heavy dry-hop presence as well. It is dense and muscular, with a blend of crystal, pale and carastan malts creating an overall biscuity characteristic. Itís all hop, no apologies.

Bomber from Jimís in Mundelein. Pours an orangey brown with an off-orange head leaving great lacing. Aroma has pine and citrus, with fruit and a solid caramel base. Taste is of sweet fruits, bitter lemon and grapefruit, a bit of spicy pine and a significant caramel backbone. Perhaps a bit of sweet honey. Medium bodied and sticky. Finishes quiet bitter with underlying sweetness. This is 90% of hopslam, with a really nice caramel presence that kept showing up. A fan years ago - still am it turns out

Bottle: Clear, light copper with thick head and great lace. Very lifted hoppy aroma. Slightly green but floral. Not really piney. Rich dry to off dry palate thats not sour but very bitter. Dense and long. Loads of hops on the palate but really malt driven. Great flavor and weight. A massive beer. Aromas of a West Coast IPA but the palate shows a hint of the East Coast IPA. Wonderful beer.

22 picked up at the Coop tonight... donít remember the price, but Iím sure it was in the $6 range.. poured into my small Stone stemware. 1" meringue like head..... the brew is a perfectly clear honey amber.. only okay retention with decent lace. Nose is not nearly as hoppy as I remember... citrus and floral, but much more balanced and no where nearly as PNW abrasive than I picture it... smells mildly phenolic... I would not peg this as a DIPA in a blind tasting. Flavor is not as bitter as I remember.. again too much pale maltiness and not enough hop flavor... grassy and citric again more floral overones... a bit too much pale maltiness for my palate anymore... also a bit of a bubblegum phenolic note plays on the finish forever. Standard body and bubble... no flaws. Bottle says best by 6/03/14, so I doubt I got a bad bottle... also the ABV is now 8.8%.. This is still pretty good, but a shell of what some of the previous batches have been. Too bad.

On tap @GarricksHeadPub. Cloudy and earthy-looking, but with a big, tasty flavour profile. Bright citrus (mango, grapefruit, tangerine) and pine hop over a subtle toasty caramel malt backbone and a light dusting of spice. Mild sweetness into an easy bitter finish. Smooth, slick and quaffable.

Smells like cypress (evergreen pine), oh, thatís a impressive fresh IPA smell! Behind the cypress pine smell, thereís peach and mongo and passion fruit smell, not smokey at all, just tropical. It has yeast smell mix with malts smell, itís just subtle. The fore taste is passion fruit and banana like, itís quite different than normal IPA! I think I notice similar aroma in Deschutesí inversion IPA (that one I really like), but it amplify the aroma, thereís no bitterness and smokiness pollute this elegant smell. The flavor side (feels in mouth), itís light sour, mainly sweet, and bitter dry at end. It leaves small apricot and peach like flower smell at mouth (in middle), it also have the banana plus cypress aroma at throat. I will say, itís just not that bitter, itís has elegant aroma and complex floral smell, a really good beer. Itís has dramatically complex aroma/smell/flavor in combination, and itís not like a typical American bitterness bomb, this make it so special! A must have beer in this year! Itís like a sweeter and more floral Inversion IPA from Deschutes. It amplify all the elements I love in Inversion IPA, and make it a unique experience. Itís like doing a crazy tasting experiment at a California farmersí market summer time. It shows: citrus, grape fruit, banana, mango, clover honey, nectarine, peach, persimmon, jasmine, apricot. Those fruity element dips some honey caramel and cypress sauce. Lovely! I should rush to WholeFoods and buy more! Thumbs up for Deschutes!

Hazy golden amber colour. Huge hoppy aroma, makes me miss this brewery. huge aggressive hop celebration. More of the same on the palate. Amazing.
