3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22oz bottle. Dark amber with an off-white head. Big hops in the aroma, but on the dull and nondescript side with a subtle mango note. Lean but substantial malt with some biscuit and light caramel. Big hops with a dark woody and fruity quality, ending with a bitterness that overpowers the malt. Medium bodied with tight carbonation. A tricky IIPA to figure out. Nothing really jumps out at you but it makes for a nice drinker nonetheless.

pours copper, white head.
Aroma is hoppy, floral and citrus
Taste is just similar, floral hops with a bitter finish and citrus.
Good DIPA, a little more on the hoppy side than I am used to.

The beer’s ABV was 8.75%
Color is copper with a white head.
Aroma is quite hoppy and with the yeast, make it very bitter, some caramel malt, but it does not seem to balance the bitter taste.
Noted a slight touch of raisin.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 oz. bottle served in tulip- poured darkened amber with brown (think of unfiltered freshly pressed apple cider) color, low if any carbonation, white ring around the glass. Aroma of caramel, some candi sugar, hops, malt... all the good things in life. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt has a pleasant sweetness intertwined with it and it all holds up swimmingly to the finish. The middle of the tasting displays the hops coming out of the woodwork- finish is slightly acidic and still has plenty of hop bite after the last swallow enters your gullet. Wave that finger because this one is a HOME RUN!!!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled. Pours beautifully orange with lovely white head. Aroma has a lot of aromatic hops, fruits, peach and grapefruit, but most of all a nice amount of bitter, piny hops. Presence of hops is immense and intense, though I kind of get the feeling that it sort of rolls over all the slight nuances rendering the beer pretty simple, though tasteful. Anyways, I love that powerful bite of bitter, piney hops that this beer gives on the palate. Overall pretty solid beer.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2009 22oz. Pours a nice amber with a foamy off-white head. Lots of citrusy and flowery hops in this very fresh aroma that make me anticipate the flavor. Great smooth maltiness with a constant hovering hop bitterness, finishing with a little bit of sweet malt. A little lingering hops. Certainly one of the smoothest and creamiest palates Iíve experienced, as well. Definitely a top-notch beer.

22oz bottle. thanks to hophead22. pours slightly hazy gold with creamy white head. citrus hop aroma with caramel malts. flavors are citrusy, earthy, and green hop leafy, a big presence of toasted crystal malt notes that tend to come off a bit plasticy. this was probably better a little fresher and would be better without the crystal.

22oz, a few months old. pours dense cloudy golden-amber with big off-white head. nose has that classic PNW fruity aroma but it isnít that big or overwhelming like a double ipa should be. flavor is orangey, grapefruit hops. this beer is pretty bitter but lacks a bigger malt backbone to sustain the bitterness. alcohol is noticed as well. the finish is pretty raw, bitter, and with slow alcohol burn. too hop sided and needs more caramel malts. is this really only 8.1%abv?

22oz bottle-pours a big tight foamy off white head and copper color. Aroma is nice grapefruit and lemon rind/pine hops. Tase is resin/grapefruit rind with some bitter, some herbal, medium malt. Then some tannins and alcohol come to the front, detracting. Thanks skoutis for trade with jwc215 and me. 3.3, at cellar temp 3.6

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Copper pour with a thick off-white head. Very nice depth to the color. Very crisp citrus aroma of hops, with a little floral and grassy notes. Piney citrus taste up front, and an excellent lingering bitter finish with some sweet malt; not as hoppy as I was expecting, but that is not a bad thing. This would be the perfect reward for yard work on a hot day. Nice mouthfeel.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Appearance: Right off the bat, this is one of the most beautiful looking beers Iíve ever poured. Itís the most amazing dark burnt orange color and is virtually clear. There is a stupid amount of lacing that hangs on to the side of the glass, which is accompanied by a nice soft off-white three finger head. This is really a remarkable looking beer.
Smell: Oh boy! Right out of the glass I get an enormous amount of pungent and fragrant hops. There is a nice amount of grapefruit, but any other citrus component youíd find in other IPAs is virtually non-existent. Point blank, Hop Henge is huge on hops. Let me tell youÖthis beer smells AMAZING! Hop lovers will rejoice in its glory.
Taste: This is going to sound completely ironic considering what Iíve said so far, but the taste is probably the weakest aspect of this beer. This by no means is to say itís anything short of brilliant. But it doesnít have as hoppy of a flavor right up front as the aromas would lead you to believe. The bitterness is more prevalent than the citrus and hop components. However, the back end of the drink really delivers a nice amount of hops. Subtlety is key here I suppose.
Mouthfeel: Iíll make this section simple and easy for you - Hop Henge coats the mouth about as nicely as any beer Iíve had. Itís not overly sweet or bitter. Itís not heavy, yet itís certainly not light. Itís balanced extremely well and thatís really all you can ask for from a good beer.
Overall: This beer is not as ďexperimentalĒ as the label would suggest. This is a good thing, though. Hop Henge is an extremely solid IPA. In fact, itís perhaps one of the best Iíve had; my score is definitely proof of that. It just does about everything right. This one was also an especially nice treat because it was driven back from Denver for me. I will definitely be on the lookout for more Deschutes beers in the future. A replacement for this is also going on my wish list.
