COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hop Henge Experimental IPA is our annual exercise in IBU escalation. An outrageous amount of Centennial and Cascade hops are added to each barrel, with a heavy dry-hop presence as well. It is dense and muscular, with a blend of crystal, pale and carastan malts creating an overall biscuity characteristic. It’s all hop, no apologies.

Pours a bright, opaque, orange, apricot color with a finger length white head that goes away slowly and leaves a blanket of thick lacing. Good amount of carbonation coming off the glass. Smells of wonderful, juicy tropical fruits like mango, papaya, guava, pineapple, orange, some pine, floral, grass, small amount of grain. Resinous, yet sweet smelling. Taste starts with lots of hop qualities as expected: resinous pine, orange, mango, papaya. Sweet even in the beginning. May of added some dextrose sugar. The the middle brings a modest malt backbone. More than I detected in the taste. A light biscuity note, as well as some sweet carmel and grain. The finish does an excellent job of showing off the hop qualities, yet still staying pretty balanced. Lots of tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, papaya, as well as resinous grass, pine, floral notes. Tastes a lot like different flavored gummi worms. Little hint of alcohol. Full body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel. The sweetness throughout really helps to cut the bitterness and balance the beer. A really solid double ipa.

Bomber to snifter (thanks Beerpig317). Looks solid; a transparent orange with off-white lacing. Smells malty and hoppy (in that order). Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Solid beer.

Bottle courtesy of Ray, and clearly not fresh. Pours a cloudy amber-orange. Mild piney hops, tons of malt - caramel, honey. Boozy and I have way too many good beers to drink. Drain pour.

22 oz bomber pour into snifter..great looking double to start with a large crater like head that settles down..big piney and citrus presence on nose with mango..papaya and pine for sure..been keeping an eye out for this for a while..quite nice mouthfeel that starts with a bit of sweetness and a lighter than expected presence..but next comes a boozy warming punch that warms the insides...brandy notes..citrus notes on the aroma are a tad dominated by the boozy finish..perhaps too much..but hey this is a pretty formidable double.so to be expected..quite enjoyable and definitely worth seeking out....

A - Pours a dark amber with 1.5 fingers of off-white. Good retention. S - Pine, sweet grapefruit, thick caramel, alcohol. T - Rich caramel malt off the top, then comes candy grapefruit, pineapple, lychee, strawberries, turns to an herbal pine flavor toward the end. Finishes fruity and bitter. M - Full bodied, smooth carbonation. This isn’t a bitter-bomb but the hops provide alot of juicu fruit flavor. Alcohol is heavy in the nose but doesn’t come through when drinking it. Very good. On tap at Alibi Room in Gastown. A paler amber color, with generous beige head. Bitter citrus hops up front of course. A bit of malt in the background.

Pours a mostly clear amber colour and a small spotty dirty white head. Aroma Is Citrus, resin, sweet bready malts, floral and overall just really smooth. Flavour consists of resin, citrus, sweet malts, bready, mild alcohol warming, and a well balanced med bitterness that pairs well with the high abv.

Pours a clear golden orange with a big fluffy white head. Aroma is a huge burst of sweet citrus hops, sweet bready pale malts and some floral notes in the background but no alcohol which is crazy for a 10.5% beer. Taste is citrus oranges, sweet pale bready malts with a nice smooth bitterness that blends very well with thay alcohol warming. Mouth feel is a nice medium full bodied beer that’s creamy with a nice carbonation thay blends the alcohol and bitterness very well. Probably the most sessionable double ipa I’ve ever had.

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a thick and fluffy off white head that leaves an amazing amount of lacing. Smells of citrus, tropical, pine, resin and caramel. Tastes of all the same in the smell and is definitely very hoppy. Mouthfeel is oily and creamy with decent carbonation and a dry finish. This is one of the best double ipas on the market and it packs a punch but also is really smooth for the high abv. Started feeling warming from the high abv about 1/8 of the way though the bomber. Deschutes makes this better and better every year. Can’t wait to try next years version.
