Commercial Description:
Who knows what inspired the ancients to build Stonehenge--or what inspired us to build Hop Henge in its likeness. But build it we did, out of wrapped bales of whole-flower hops out on the brewery lawn. Like the rest of the Bond Street Series, Hop Henge highlights the creativity and curiousity of our brewers. Bolder than its English ancestors, with huge hops and a bitter finish, this IPA is no wallflower.

NOTE: This is the original version. In 2007 it was bumped up to an IIPA. See that entry here.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle. Cloudy deep amber-orange, average frothy foamy off-white head. Malt, booze and lactic aroma, woody/leafy hops - lots of them, but more APA than IPA. Taste - THERE’s the hops, resiny, bitter hops, enough woody juicy malt to carry it, decent alcohol - very nice. Solid body, nicely astringent and bitter - long bitter finish. A little too hoppy - lotsa malt in the aroma, where is it in the taste?

Thanks to Bück Dich for unsolicited offering #2. Warm orange body with a sudsy, buff-colored head. Peachy hop aroma plus toasted grain and mild, pleasant diacetyl, which manifested like a hint of butterscotch. Spruce-like flavor with lightly perceptible muted residual sweetness and aggressive bitterness. Toasty malt notes are a nice compliment. Finish is jagged, rough, and lingering. This made the Hop Devil that preceded it seem sheepish and undeserving of its name.

I agree with Flyswatter’s rating more than I do my own. Thanks to me for the bottle and sharing it with myself. I credit Flyswatter with mentioning HumuloneRed’s inability to pick up one on his last trip with my having bought more than one. Life sure is complicated - complicated fun.

Bottle courtesy of The Fly. Shared with Humulone Red and Dewbrewer. I agree with Reds comments except that he liked it a little more than I did.

Thanks to Alan (fly) for sharing this beer. 22 oz. Bottle. It pours a slightly murky deep copper color with a big off white head and sticky lacing. Big pine and grapefruit aroma. The flavor has huge amounts of pine and grapefruit with a big caramel background for some balance. Big body and lingering bitterness. Great beer.

(22oz bottle) Clear amber body topped by medium beige head with good retention. Aroma is orange/floral, some grapefruit, light caramel, bread. Taste is medium sweet, sharp grapefruit, light floral, herbal. Watery medium body, some acidity, nicely drinkable. Straightforward IPA, good stuff.

Dark copper color with a moderate head of light cream bubbles. Large aromas of citrus, with grapefruit and lemon zest. A pie crust scent underneath, with dough, malt and a touch of toffee. Nothing new and exciting, but rather typical PNW these days. Full hops great the front with just enough bready malt to keep things from being to overpowering. Citrus continues though to the finish and holds on only to relinquish a touch in the finish. Miss the depth of malt that others in this ilk have. Still another fine hoppy IPA if the hops are what you want.

Thanks to bols for this opportunity! Poured a reddish orange color with a respectable initial head and some lacing. Quite an IPA, loaded with hops, hoppy aromas and flavors. Citrus grapefruit flavors in the aroma. Flavor was strong orange rind bitterness over light grapefruits. Some floral aspects came out with warmer temperatures. Was expecting more caramel in the malt flavor, but it wasn’t there very strongly (not a bad thing). Mouthfeel was very full with average carbonation.
