COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

22 oz. bottle served in a Deschutes tulip. . Big thanks to Matt (mfavoino) for sending this my way. Best by date of 9-21-2012. A: Pours a dark black color with a huge layer of tan foam forming on the pour. The head has amazing retention and leaves some nice sticky webbings of lace. S: Bursts of citrus, bitter pine and roasted malts all mingle together. Slight hints of chocolate mix with a nice malty sweetness as well. T: More bitter roasted malts with the hops peaking up mid palate. Citrus zest, some orange peel and slight green pine. The finish is clean, but then some sweet chocolate notes and slight roasted malts creep back up on the very back end. M: Medium bodied with a nice medium-high carbonation. The finish is nice and roasty. O: Great beer. We’re heading down towards the "best by date" so I’m not sure if the hops would have been more vibrant a few months ago. I might have liked it a tad more then. Either way I wouldn’t hesitate to have this again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-07-2012

Aroma is an amazing Carmely sweet citrus hops. Pours a dark brown with thick creamy tan head that stays thought the entire drink leaving a really thick lacing. Taste is very creamy malty at first but it is definitely an ipa with all of the floral hops citrus and a little pine with a coffee after taste. Overall this is a really great thick beer.

Thx. to Travlr for this one. 66 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBSG. Pours dark brown with a mocha head. Fruity nose with light berries blended with semi-dominating roasted malts, stronger coffee, hops are coming through lighter. Taste is thicker roasted malts, some lighter mocha and coffee sweetness, caramel, hops are not terribly strong, coming through lighter in the end, bit floral hops. m/m body, not bad.

May 30th, 2010 - My first Black IPA was a pivotal experience in my beer drinking “career.” It demonstrated that hybrid flavors can mix and mingle and flow like a new, organic creature. It was hybridization at its best - evolution and advance. But this is not a hard and fast rule for new styles, as I soon found out with Deschutes Hop in the Dark. I might blame circumstances like the time of day, or the lingering effect of the last meal on my palate. but the Hop in the Dark tasted like a bipolar, confused beast. It begins with a welcome aroma of raisins, chocolate milk, cobwebs, wet granite and dark, deep malts. This bouquets always remind me of the best of dark beers, and the Hop in the Dark’s nose only served to raise my already high expectations for Deschutes’ work. But the beer itself tastes like it hasn’t yet had a chance to fully settle. There are elements of a porter clashing with elements of an IPA. First the porter clambers on top of the IPA, boasting mellow malty flavors and relaxed brown sugar notes. Than the IPA ekes out it’s time on top, showing off its hoppy bitterness. This cycle continues through the aftertaste, unified only by a nice dose of alcohol. Even so, this beer feels divisive and confused, sending my taste buds into a dizzying back-and-forth neck exercise to catch the attention of both players.

650 ml bottle. Thanks dalezilla!
Pours a pitch black colour with a firm off-white head. Aroma of floral hops, chocolate and spruce. Flavour of roasted malts, floral hops, grass, dark chocolate and some dried exotic fruits such as mango. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and a strong lingering bitter finish with fruits and some chocolate. A great generously hopped black IPA.

Bomber bottle poured black hue with thick creamy tan head long lasting and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasty malts, pine, citrus hops and earthiness. Flavor is complex, chocolate malts, hint of sweetness before the pungent hops and pleasant bitter on the finish, a nice, flowery, herbal component and lasting dryness, hints of coffee, earth, wood and faint berry with a perfect level of roast. Creamy medium-full body. There is a lot going on with this beer & a lot to be enjoyed.
