3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 arrogantb (901) - Denver, Colorado, USA - JUN 5, 2010
22oz bottle $5. Dark black color with a mocha head. Smells slightly hoppy but a lot more malty. Tastes like black butte porter with a bit of orange from the hops. Overall this just wasn’t hoppy enough for me like most of Deschute’s IPA’s and pale ales. For hoppy dark ales I would much rather have a Stone self-righteous ale.

Hop aroma shows up clearly and it pours clear with a small head. Very nice dark malt flavors and smooth mouthfeel.

omber poured a clear dark brown with a lasting brown head. Aromas of pink graspefruit, orange, tropical fruit, pine, light charcoal and light roastiness. Palate was m edium bodied and smooth with a drty finish. Flavors of charcoal, roastiness, grapefruit, orange zest and pine with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish. I still don’t like the Cascadian dark moniker.

Appearance: Pours black with a 1/4 inch white head that subsides to a mere gathering of film.
Aroma: A mixture of Amarillo and fresh herbs. Slight roast notes, but very faint.
Taste: Bitter herbal hops, dry roast and slight grapefruit.
Mouthfeel: Thin and coating.
Overall: A black IPA I really like, something that could stand tall next to Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale (MY favorite Black IPA).
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 portableparty (1190) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - JUN 1, 2010
Bomber $4.99, what a deal. Aroma is pine and faint mixture of coco and malt. Pour is dark red-brown, but finishes black in glasss with a very minimal head that dissipates fast. Taste has a roasted malt and chocolate pine flavor which is very interesting. Palate is medium and chaulky, finishes dry. Another good and interesting beer from Deschutes, and only $4.99.

From a bottle. Poured dark brown with a small off white head. This has a nice big piney hop aroma. Also some subtle chocolate and roast malt character. Taste is similar to the aroma. Flavor is very hop forward which lingers on into the finish. Caramel and chocolate flavors appear towards the middle and finish. Some alcohol present in the finish. Overall this is an interesting and well crafted beer.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2010 Bomber poured into snifter. Dark brown pour with a large, carbonated head. Immediate intense hop notes on the nose followed by slight roasty presence attuned to cold press coffee. A light body with attained carbonation leads to an oily, resinous hop backbone with notes of citrusy (grapefruit and lemons) and grassy hops. An interesting, yet failrly pleasing, concoction of two styles.

pours a very dark brown with a little red tint when held to the light, a small khaki head, and great lacing.
smell is of malt, some cocoa, a little roastiness, some dark fruit, and a some smoke in the back.
taste is smooth, chocolate, a touch of coffee, roasted malt, some smoke, and a little dark fruit, ends creamy and nicely bitter.

Black with a tan ring head. It displays a moist, hoppy aroma. I noticed the alcohol in the flacor as well as the typical hoppy flavors that accompany a good NW IPA. It’s all followed by a lingering bitter aftertaste. Another nice addition from Deschutes.

22oz bottle capped and stamped with a ’Best After 05/29/10", so I guess I’m good to go with drinking this. Pours a very dark walnut brow...basically black...withe uniform slightly burnt off white head. Good retention and light lacing. Nice toasty malt...char, cocoa nibs, toasted dark wheat bread with noticable dank hoppiness. Medium to medium heavy body, slick with even lively carbonation. Very roasty malt up front...bitter sweet cocoa, black patent, hints of coffee and oats. Hop dankiness comes in mid way through with a nice bittering that feels prickly with the carbonation and leaves a lasting bitterness on the palate.
