COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Black pour from 22oz bottle with off white head. Taste is dry, bitter, chocolate, coffee, earthy and malty. Balances well. Delicious overall. Glad I have another one by accident

Another fun romp in the beer world provided by Deschutes! 22oz bomber style. This is a pretty good offering of hops and malt, even a little spicy at times. I enjoyed this concoction, although a bit medicinal.

The color is a very dark brown with a large white tan head, and the aroma blends caramel, chocolate, and roasted malts, resin and floral hops, and a bit of solventy alcohol at the end. The taste is mildly bitter, slightly umami, slightly sour, and a touch sweet; the palate blends a thin texture, medium-light body, soft carbonation, and a slightly bitter finish, which doesn’t complement the beer but instead distracts from the flavor.

Aroma of cocoa nibs, chocolate and hops. Appears a dark black with a thin foam rim. Taste is bland with subtle notes of chocolate, cocoa, toffee, oats and hops. Overall, I’m a little disappointed by this. It’s not bad but it’s very bland. B rating.

Great Black IPA. Lots of roast malt in this with some chocolate even. Some citrus hops, with a dry bitter hop feel. Pours dark with great head and lacing. Medium bitter finish. Tap takeover at Good Dog.

Bomber. Color is dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is dark roasted malt and some coffee. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, some chocolate and citrusy hops. Medium-to-heavy body. The hops are a nice counter to the malt, very well balanced. An excellent black IPA.

Pours dark brown with sticky egg white head. Great lacing. Aroma is very light roasted malts, some espresso, great grapefruit and tropical hop notes. Super light body, but there’s a slight sticky coating on the tongue. The more I drink it, the more I like it! Isn’t Deschutes the creator of the Black IPA? These guys are great.

Mahogany with a tan head. Aromas of pine and citrus with a burt or dark malt note. Taste is pine, citrus, caramel, slight chocolate and slight roast. Decent body. Tasty.

Bottle. Pours black with a big foamy head that fades to a nice ring and leaves excellent lacing. Aroma is a great mix of pine and citrus hops with tons of burnt toast, chocolate, and light caramel. Taste is mostly pine hops and burnt toast which I love. Also get grapefruit, tropical fruit, and chocolate at different times. Light sweetness and moderate bitterness. Touch of smoke in the finish. Great Black IPA.

On draft at Capones -first beer week event! Inky black, slight hop aroma. Poor head but nice, creamy lacing. Well balanced malty taste with a decent hops bite. A winner! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
