COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

May 30th, 2010 - My first Black IPA was a pivotal experience in my beer drinking “career.” It demonstrated that hybrid flavors can mix and mingle and flow like a new, organic creature. It was hybridization at its best - evolution and advance. But this is not a hard and fast rule for new styles, as I soon found out with Deschutes Hop in the Dark. I might blame circumstances like the time of day, or the lingering effect of the last meal on my palate. but the Hop in the Dark tasted like a bipolar, confused beast. It begins with a welcome aroma of raisins, chocolate milk, cobwebs, wet granite and dark, deep malts. This bouquets always remind me of the best of dark beers, and the Hop in the Dark’s nose only served to raise my already high expectations for Deschutes’ work. But the beer itself tastes like it hasn’t yet had a chance to fully settle. There are elements of a porter clashing with elements of an IPA. First the porter clambers on top of the IPA, boasting mellow malty flavors and relaxed brown sugar notes. Than the IPA ekes out it’s time on top, showing off its hoppy bitterness. This cycle continues through the aftertaste, unified only by a nice dose of alcohol. Even so, this beer feels divisive and confused, sending my taste buds into a dizzying back-and-forth neck exercise to catch the attention of both players.

650 ml bottle. Thanks dalezilla!
Pours a pitch black colour with a firm off-white head. Aroma of floral hops, chocolate and spruce. Flavour of roasted malts, floral hops, grass, dark chocolate and some dried exotic fruits such as mango. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and a strong lingering bitter finish with fruits and some chocolate. A great generously hopped black IPA.

Bomber bottle poured black hue with thick creamy tan head long lasting and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasty malts, pine, citrus hops and earthiness. Flavor is complex, chocolate malts, hint of sweetness before the pungent hops and pleasant bitter on the finish, a nice, flowery, herbal component and lasting dryness, hints of coffee, earth, wood and faint berry with a perfect level of roast. Creamy medium-full body. There is a lot going on with this beer & a lot to be enjoyed.

Bottle from dodgy Wyoming beer store. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Big hop note son the nose. The hop flavor on the tongue is balanced by the malt. Clean finish. Nice.

Bottle: Very dark brown with a thick tan head. Nose is ripe with hops; citrus and florals. Light chocolate and some roast. Very nice. The flavor is hop forward with mostly florals competing with a roasty background. Citrus and cocoa are again lightly present. Very nice.

On tap. Pours a dark black with a medium tan head and leaves good lacing. Smells of citrus, roasted malt, and chocolate . Tastes of all the same things I mentioned above with a good coffee taste and a big hop kick. Mouthfeel is medium with a dry finish. Overall this is a very good cda and deschutes did a great job all around.

Location/Date:Bottle split with Dave on Friday, September 7th.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with light brown head.
Aroma: Aroma is roasty, faint hops.
Taste: Nice amount of roast, faint coffee, some hop but not as much as expected.
Palate:Medium light body.

Summary: This was a really solid black IPA, not as hop forward as some others of the same style.

Its Black with a thin head. Roasty malt, almost coffee like, with Northwest style hop aromas. Very tasty burnt roasted caramel semi sweet malts giving away to very flavorful Cascade hops, but still backed up by big malts. Clean dry finish. Very good!
