3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 swanmann (399) - Norman, Oklahoma, USA - NOV 5, 2011
It’s black with sticky tan foam, leaving plenty of lacing. It’s got a mild aroma of coffee with a clean, bright floral component. The flavor is pale ale bitter, for sure, with a dose of caramel sweetness and roasty choco bitterness to ride along with it. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation. I think it’s a successful style because many IPA’s or IIPA’s will play with the same sort of caramel heavy backbone that this one approaches, plus it blends the bitter aspects of roasting and hops as well. Very nice.

I enjoyed this dark hoppy beer. It poured nicely with a full body and nice head. I don’t usually prefer hoppy beers, but this one is good.

22 oz bottle in Portland. Pours dark brown / black with thick tannish head. Not a real hoppy nose or taste....mild. A good but not great black IPA....malty and coffee tastes tended to overpower the hops. Glad I tried it out but not a major fan.

bottle... dark brown body, big medium mocha head, good retention and lace... the nose is a bit boring, light grassy hops, only a bit of hops, nice, but not showing off the balance necessitated of a black ipa... the taste is more balanced, but also really sweet, bit of chocolate, light roast, sweet grass, chemical piney finish, impressed... really solid bipa

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good beer.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 MattH (390) - California, USA - OCT 19, 2011
Bottle. Black pour. Two inch thick brownish white head. Aroma of fresh pine. Good flavor. Pine dominates, but there is also a pleasant sweet flavor. Some taste of roasted malts. This is complex. Biting carbonation. Medium or slightly higher than medium body.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ADfan (274) - Orange County, California, USA - OCT 9, 2011
Very dark color in the glass with a toasty aroma. Roasted nuts and some citrus come to mind. Strange having the IPA bitterness with a such a dark beer. Smooth beer especially has it warms a little.
