4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber. Black, opaque body, brown head, good sized, tenacious! Never saw my beer. Lots of lace, sheets. Aroma is hoppy, some bright citrus notes, some pine, and--obviously--some toasted caramel malt and baker’s chocolate, some dark fruits. Palate is medium-full, creamy, foamy, coarse carbonation, medium-dry, clean and awesome. Flavor is lightly sweet, some caramel, lots of burnt coffee, baker’s chocolate, some sour and burned up malt flavor, hoppy in the direction of pine, grapefruit. The malts contribute considerable bitterness and flavor, but not much sugar. A little too much goin’ on for 6.5% and it comes across harsh and turbulent. Still good. Nailed the carbonation.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
08.21.14 best by.
Poured into a mason jar style glass on 07.29.14.
A: Citrus and caramel.
A: Midnight black with some red. 1 1/2 finger tan head that retains very well.
T: Grapefruit and caramel dominate. Roastiness and cocoa are subtle.
P: Creamy and crisp. Good carbonation.
O: This is like a hoppy porter. It wasn’t as hoppy as other CDAs, but Deschutes seems to strive more for balance rather than IBU crowns.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Busters. Deschutes tap takeover. Snifter glass. Dark black color. Decent head with more than decent lacing. Aroma is mostly citrus with subtle hops. Taste leans on freshness with hop influenced characteristics. Some roasted notes as exemplified by subtle bitterness. Bright and refreshing. Actually a very decent option as black IPAs go. I would order again.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours almost black, slight brown hues, finger creamy tan head, nice lacing. Aroma dank pine, grapefruit, earthy, doughy and roast malt. Taste mostly balanced, citrus and pine hops, slight tropical, roast malt, not malty, but not bitter, well made. Mouthfeel medium body low-medium carbonation, slight roast and hop astringency, finish on dry side, but sweeter than an ipa. Overall very nice beer, hops and roast nicely balanced, I will seek this out more often, this should be the benchmark for this new style.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a 22oz. Initial nose is toasty, hoppy and coffee like. Taste is surprisingly watery for the aroma and color. It does have a nice bitter taste with a hoppy bite. Overall a decent CDA, but not a lot of depth to it.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz bottle from Albertson’s in Hillsboro, OR. Initial nose is roasty and creamy. After tasting, I get strong, dry coffee roastiness and hoppy bitterness, which overpower the malt that’s hiding in the background. Mouthfeel is creamy and a bit sweet at first, but has a very long bitter and astringent finish. I wish this one had a stronger malt backbone to balance out the astringency of the roasted grains and hops. All in all, not too bad.

>> Deeper black pour with gray foam and great lacing. Nose is black olive and piney hops. Taste is piney, resinous, black beldi olive, forest floor, aggressive bitterness, unsweetened dark chocolate, orange peel dark chocolate, soil, dirt. Still, good. A bit too much black olive in the aroma. Aggressive spicy hop body with medium alcohol. Assertive, high IBUs, very nice. Great pair with spicy food.
